We always used a cold, moist washcloth, with supervision...some little ones with large mouths can get overly zealous. Wet terry cloth seems to be soothing to tender little gums.

a stainless steel canning jar ring. it's easy to hold and the metal is nice and cool on their gums.
My sterling silver bracelet (solid metal looks like a C ) is another favorite.. the tiny ones chew on it while on my wrist.. the older ones I get tired of the slobber on my wrist and hand over the bracelet for a bit.
ETA - on those canning jar rings.. the edges are rolled so that there wouldn't be a sharp edge.

FYI-- We love Hyland's teething tablets. They really seem to help when they are fussy.

I like solid hardwood teethers. I love the stuff from Little Sapling Toys on Etsy. They make neat shapes.

My knuckle! Seems to be his favorite choice right now.

I used to put an ice cube in the center of a washcloth and secure it tightly with an elastic band so that there was no chance of the ice cube escaping. My son loved to gnaw on that! I've since heard the suggestion to make the ice cubes from chamomile tea, but never tried it myself.

I've heard of amber teething necklaces that are worn close to the skin to help with teething. I love natural products and would try this if I could be guaranteed it wouldn't break. Has anyone tried these before?

I have not, but they are popular with many of my friends, and I have a friend who sells them here. I've actually been meaning to get one for my sister who has arthritis, as they are supposed to help with all sorts of inflammation. I don't think that they are guaranteed not to break, but the beads are individually knotted, so that if a break were to occur, you wouldn't have beads everywhere.

I've just learned a very simple method of adding a bead to a knit stitch, using a crochet hook to slide the bead onto a stitch which you slip off your needle, then slip your needle back through the stitch again from the top of the bead. I wonder if someone could use the amber beads to knit a wider choker style necklace, making the amber bead less of a choking hazard for little ones. Just a thought.

My knuckle too! Except that it got all swollen from it recently! Another thing I was surprised at was my baby girl using an inexpensive wooden massager. The kind that kind of looks like a spider. I think I bought it at Vitamin Cottage for like $.99
I wonder about the amber necklaces too. What would make them help? I've seen them in catalogs and such.

well, in my country not so long ago they used the bone of a squid, it is hard and big enough but also some softness for the gums....
