Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I hope this doesn't seem like a ridiculous question that I should already know but I've been pondering it for weeks. I'm one that is rarely at a loss for words but in explaining modesty to my older 2, I've always just said "that's appropriate or that's inappropriate". Now that they're getting older, I need to venture into more meaningful discussions with them. A few weeks back they switched on Dancing with the Stars b/c of all the talk about Bristol Palin on there and we had quit watching this show after Season 1 b/c of the provocative and suggestive dances and dance attire. Again, that brief 15 min I let them watch confirmed my decision that this was certainly not "family entertainment". I don't think they would understand me even using those words "provocative" or "suggestive" so again, I just say it's inappropriate.

What "wording" would you use to a 10 and 11 year old to discuss this?

I would probably explain more than just use a word.. like.. Those types of moves are things that we'd say are suggestive or provocativ.. it suggests to others things that should be private between a husband and wife.. by explaining the words you want to use.. then you can use just the words later.

Or if that's too much information.. you might just say it attracts the eyes to the private parts of our bodies.

This topic comes up frequently at my house, not because of the TV, but because of all the scantily clad people at the pool all summer. I mean- sheesh! If the women had on their regular bras and underwear they would be more covered up than in their swimsuits. (And since they wouldn't be thrilled at all if we saw them in bras and undies, I still can't figure out why they feel OK out in public in less than that).

Anyway, I talk to my kids about how God gave us beautiful bodies that are a personal thing- not meant to be displayed like a billboard. I tell them that not everyone needs orwants to see all their skin. I talk about safety as well- covering up at the pool is both modest and safe for your skin, which is very important in our climate. ALso- safety in that too much exposure brings unwanted attention. It's not all glamorous like on TV.
