Hi,
Help!!! So much has changed this year. We decided to put our 13 yr. old ds in a Montessori middle school. We are thrilled so far. However, I have hit my first "snaffooo" with the teacher.
The class (6 kids) are going on a field trip which is 3 hours away. Unfortunately, I am unable to attend. I have been told that on the way home, the kids will be watching "Forrest Gump". My ds is the only one who has not seen it. I told his teacher my feelings, and today found out that it will still be shown. However, there will be another car going without the movie. My ds would be the only one riding in it.
Now. I don't know what to do. I don't like putting him in the position to ridiculed. My thought is to watch the movie with him and explain the sensitive scenes. Then, at parent's night tomorrow (Tues.), explain to the teacher that I didn't pay for this!!!
What do you all think? I am running into this more and more with my ds-even before he went to school. Am I needing to let go a bit?? Do I allow some of these things in and how do I know it's ok???
I will say, he's very mature...he even told me..."Mom, if you really don't want me to see it, I'll ride in the other car even if I'm the only one."
I don't want to do that to him.

I would talk to the principal asap.
I would come with dvd in hand to a certain scene that has Jenny and Forrest on the bed...and then very graphic de-robing, shall we say?...and then the very explicit showing of body parts and touching of those parts.
And then I would ask the principal if this is what their school is teaching and endorsing.
No way would I let my 13 yo son see Forrest Gump. No-can-do.
Maybe I'm just a prudish 29 yo? But...I don't think so...I'm not that far removed from things. Lol.
I have a quote from Michelle Duggar in my head that comes to mind for this: "Their eyes are the keys to their hearts." It is not right for little boys (and I do think 13 is little) to see such things. Just my humble opinion...but stuff like this steams me up.
To have your son "punished" and ride in another car is ridiculous. The movie should just not be shown.
I would also bring in about 5 other movies that would be more appropriate and offer another suggestion--in hand--so the teacher/school does not have to do footwork.
I am soooooo sorry that you are going through this.

Admittedly, I don't know much about DVDs. So, I'll ask what is probably a very naive/stupid question. Is it possible that the particular DVD they will be showing has been edited to remove some of the less appropriate scenes? I've never seen Forrest Gump myself, so I can't comment on which scenes those might be.
I like the idea of coming up with another, more appropriate movie.

I agree with all of Maggie's excellent advice, especially the proactive idea about bringing in other movies. Perfect.
We wouldn't have shown this to our youth group, nor would I have my young teens watch it. There are many inappropriate parts (the mom in the doctor's office, the drugs) that I don't want them exposed to in this kind of movie.
My two oldest have seen Bella and The Passion of the Christ, two movies that I can think of that had a higher rating of PG-13 or above. There is just so much time for them to see movies in their lifetime. I don't see the need to show them at such young ages, like they are going to go away and not be available later. :)
The three-hour away field trip would have me worried. :(
Are there any other parents that feel the same as you? I'd get them to go with you to see the principal if possible.

Wow! I can't even IMAGINE showing this movie to kids that age! What about the scene where Forrest's mom sleeps with his principal so he can go to regular school? What about Jenny's heavy drug use and promiscuity? (Both of which are shown to make her unhappy, and I wouldn't say that the movie glorifies those things, but you still shouldn't be showing it to middle-schoolers!) What about the implication that Jenny was molested by her own father?
I love this movie, but I can't fathom a school showing it, let alone to anyone in middle school.

Good News!
Come to find out, I was not the only one who spoke up-Yayy!! The movie will not be shown, and the kids are encouraged to read or chat. Whoo Hooo! I guess the events got "out of hand"..and it really was one particular child who kept "stirring the pot" with the desire to see this movie.
I did ask the teacher why a movie was even brought up, as this is not part of the Montessori philosophy. She agreed, and the only reason this was even brought up was the fact that the farm they were visiting had done a documentary and were going to be watching that on the way there. From now on though, there will be no movies.
Thank you all for responding, and for confirming what I already knew!
