Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

It's been a long summer here already, and July isn't over yet. We normally have extremely hot temperatures the last half of July through August. The extreme hot had already settled in by early June this year. We normally reach that Inside Insanity stage by early September, but it's usually bearable since Autumn is right around the corner. We're craving time outdoors, but don't have access to a swimming pool. So, other than sprinklers and kiddie pools, what are your remedies for the Long Summer Days Inside Insanity syndrome?

Camping inside, read-alouds, board games, lots and lots of library materials, painting (both walls and watercolors here), special snacks and some kind of break from normal routines...all sandwiched between chores and prayers...those are things we try never to abandon...a healthy balance between loose structure and activities that make Summer a true vacation! It also helps to remember how difficult the longggg dreary Winter can be.

Some of my favorite memories from when I was little was the long lazy summer afternoons. We didn't have central ac (or any ac!) so after lunch we'd go to our rooms with our fans and "rest" whether that meant napping or reading or playing quietly.

After "rest time" we'd go outside where our yard was mainly shaded and have popsicles or lemonade or some such "cool" treat. We'd set up blankets under the trees and read some more or play in the shade making up games etc.

While it was always warm I don't remember it being overly hot even though I'm sure it was!

Consider searching for some of the winter threads about cabin fever.. like this one..

Not all things will translate.. but there's ideas in there for indoor active games and things to do inside and places to go that are inside etc.

oh.. I did think of one semi-alternative to sprinklers..

lay down a big tarp or sheet of heavy plastic.. dump some cheapie dish soap on it.. and put a sprinkler on it (I find a fan sprinkler works well).. a great big, relatively cheap slip and slide that will take more abuse than the purchased slip and slides.
