Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

We are living for the first time in a house with a staircase and my baby has learned to scale the bottom step. I'm sure it's only a few days before he's going to be able to quickly get higher. What do you all do about this? Hyper-vigilance? Baby gates? Upstairs we can completely shut off the stairs from both rooms no problem but at the bottom I really can't unless we're shut into the kitchen. That does account for a significant portion of each day so maybe keeping a close eye on him the rest of the time would work. My other two kids will have no reason to go upstairs regularly after next week so a gate would not be in their way.

Thoughts?

I feel your pain!! We've been in this house for 10 years and 6 babies - and we have never found anything that works well on our staircase. It is a very irregular opening. Greta can get up the stairs now, and we have an awful gate that everyone has to climb over. I am very pleased that our new home has a door at the bottom of the stairs!

babygates for sure.. Depending on his age you may want one of the cheapie ones that you'd have to climb over or take down and put back up.. once they're old enough I start teaching stair skills.. having them climb down backwards and such. Usually around 18 months is when I can trust them to do it. We're just at that point.. but we don't have stairs.. my sister does.. so I "sic" an older kid on the baby when we're there to keep a close eye/hand on the process but we're letting him practise going up and down now.
