What is your favorite carrier (or sling or wrap) for carrying baby on your hip?
Thanks,
Tracey

Maya Wrap Sling!
I've worn mine at least once a day for the past 5 years. What would I do without it? It goes everywhere with me ~ like handiwipes, or snacks, I never leave home without it!

I found the wrap too cumbersome to take off and put back on in public (especially if I had no other adult hands to help!) So, it's the ERGO all the way for us. We went all over Paris with it when the little guy was 6 months old. I liked how it distributed the weight on my hips, not my lower or upper back.
Peace,
Macmom

The Ergo doesn't do a hip carry though does it? just front or back?

Yes...the ergo baby can be used front, hip and back..once my babies are strong enough to hold up their head, my favorite spot for them is on my back...

ah.. the people I know who use the Ergo never mentioned it.. probably because they use it over the sling because they need to balance better between the shoulders.

Thanks.
Any more votes?
I have a Moby D which worked GREAT for front carrying (especially as a newborn) but I can't get comfortable with it as a hip carrier (even though it says you can carry that way).
So, I would love to know if any of you actually use the Ergo as a hip carrier?
Thanks again,
Tracey

I LOVE my Ergo for back carries, but I don't like it for on the hip. You can technically do a hip carry with it, but I rarely bother because besides finding it less comfortable than my sling, you have to reposition one of the main buckles to turn it into a hip carrier.

We have some Kelty backpacks for long distance back carries. This is what I've found for myself.
For long days where you're not doing a lot of walking.. like swim meets.. and you're wanting to sit a good portion of the time.. a sling so littles can be up or down very easily.. and if they're small enough to need to be held constantly a mix of carriers is easier on me than just one style.. so a sling and wrap for instance.
For over 6 months old that needs carried the whole time for long walking.. definately the backpack (ergo, mei tai, etc.. something with some structure and uses both shoulders)
But something I just discovered this past fall.. I LOVE the sling for a back carry for a slightly older child (my 3 yr old in this case) for long or difficult walks. They're big enough that falling isn't a problem.. and it's easy to let them up and down.. they sit right on your hips so balance just about like a backpack for carrying the weight though only with one shoulder.. and when they're not up.. the sling just isn't bulky to continue carrying.
But I always go to my sling for most things.. it's easy on and off.. I can slip a sleeping child in or out of it.. it takes little space to carry along (mine actually lives in the car so I always have it when out) I carry on my front for tiny ones and gradually move to a hip carry as they get bigger.. and when I'm shopping it's easier for me to keep in mind space considerations and what they can reach
I even toss my sling into the stroller for walks.. after all.. what if the stroller broke
If you want info on any particular one and just want to read reviews.. babywearer.com is a great resource.

Oh and the reason I specified a maya wrap (though there are others) instead of just a ring sling.. it really makes a difference in how well the sling works for me that it does NOT have the padded side rails.. and the maya also has a fold to pull over your shoulder so it won't slide onto your neck. Not having padded sides means you can pull it up nice and tight.. which makes a big difference in use and comfort.
