Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

My almost 10 yr old daughter is having sleep problems. Through the years she has gradually needed less. But now she is getting less than 8 hours. She goes to bed about 9pm and is still up at midnight! She says she is worried about various things...She says she is scared of being awake while we are all asleep. It seems the more she worries the harder it is for her to get to sleep....

I let her read in bed if she can't sleep. I've suggested praying the rosary. I tell her to try closing her eyes for a few minutes every once in a while...
Any suggestions?

My daughter went through the exact same thing at that age! In fact, we were just talking about it the other day. I think it must be some hormonal changing thing. What helped us was for me to just go and comfort her and take a little more time with her before going to bed. Also, I had her drink some sleepytime (chamomile)tea before bed and tried to find a more soothing routine. It lasted a few months, but then she suddenly was past it. Good luck! I know it's hard. I did tell my dd that she had more chance of falling asleep if she stayed in bed!

My husband uses a homeopathic remedy called Calms Forte made by Hyland's, and it does seem to help him sleep when he's stressed. They make a children's version also.

I've had 2 go through something similar. They didn't say they were worrying but they would become stressed about not being able to sleep. After a while I tried to sound very casual (I think they thought that this was abnormal or something!) about it when they would come down and tell me they can't sleep. You could hear the stress in their voice about not being able to sleep. I would respond that it happens to everyone, its ok, I'm not mad if you fall asleep later. But usually said this in fewer words! I don't think there was one thing that worked - like someone said, they seemed to out grow it.

For my dd praying the joyfull mysteries seemed to help. Also, I would share what I may do when I can't sleep. Which is usually say the rosary, close my eyes, get comfy and stay in that position ( I think kids tend to keep eyes open, while tossing and turning!

Also, saying a prayer with them about it seems to be reassurring and practical too as God can truly help!

I wonder - is there patron saint of sleep or insomnia?

Barb

Added my ds found listening to a cd with a quite story would help him - he had one with bible stories.

Speak to your pediatrician first but my daughter who has trouble "calming her mind" as she calls it takes 2 g of Melatonin about 30 minutes before bed. You can buy melatonin over the counter wherever vitamins are sold. Melatonin is non-habit forming and is just enough to take the edge off so she can sleep.

Good luck and I hope you and she find something that works.
