I am a little stumped on what should go into Christmas stockings - especially for a 15 mo boy. Any ideas?!?!?

Why do so many people put fruit and chocolate, is there a reason (or tradition) behind this?

TIA ladies ... I am looking forward to reading the responses.

My teenager gets a jar of Smuckers Raspberry Preserves every year!! He loves it but since it's expensive, I usually don't buy it. Is there anything like that that he might like? It seems that 15 yo boys are always into food.

We do very simple stockings so far and they are opened Christmas morning before heading off to see whoever we are having dinner with. This year we are putting playsilks from the grab bag section of A Toy Garden--if I can ever get the site to let me check out without crashing! My kids each have just one silk they love. Ds's is getting pretty ratty so I got them long, thin ones for only $5 each. And then just for fun I got a tiny little green one for our baby who will be 11 mo at Christmas.

Then kids who are old enough get a treat. Last year oranges were a big hit. We've been eating them more commonly this year so I might do pomegranates. My kids are totally fascinated by them.

For dh I usually pick up a bag of chocolate-covered espresso beans in the bulk section of Whole Foods or something.

And I'm starting to wonder if I need to keep up the venerable tradition of my mother and mother-in-law and start getting stuff for my own stocking, too . . .

Just read Becky's post . . . my brother-in-law loved Nutella when he was 15. How about that for a stocking? As kids we always got food treats that were just a bit too pricey for the rest of the year. I know my mom always put a sleeve of pop-tarts in (But I loved them as a kid).

Did you mean a 15 month old boy or a 15 yr old boy?

My just barely two year old is getting some trucks that are bigger than hot wheels but not safe for those under 3. Stores like Target carry them regularly. They fill the stocking quickly, since its hard to fill one for a child this age. A box of gold fish or animal crackers or other baby cracker works, too.

My older kids would be horrified if our littlest didn't have a stocking , but it sure is hard to fill one for babies/toddlers this age.

I am looking in particular for a 15 month old boy.

What about:
a little toy phone
Little People Fire Fighter Finn (with his dog)
a few bath toys
books

????????????????????

I got some of those peek a blocks last year for my little guy.. one box filled up the stocking rather well

Fruit and nuts are a tradition.. think of the Little House on the Prairie books where it was so special to get an orange. And the only place you get store bought candies is in your stocking.

We get tangerines rather than oranges.. don't get them often. And apples because they're well liked. I used to get loose nuts in the shell.. and I love that tradition.. but I gotta tell you.. with 8 kids I can't handle all those nuts shells.. I've taken to buying the little .33-.99 cent packs of shelled nuts to tuck into stockings.

Some other favorites.. the mini boxes of cereals (baby gets cherrios!! ), packets of hot chocolate, those chewy fruit treats or fruit roll ups,

I've taken to doing almost all different type of hershey's kisses for the chocolate.. we rarely get those at other times.

Another idea I use for St. Nicholas' Day.. yogurt raisins. This year I'm adding pomegranites to St. Nicholas' Day boots as well.. they're so expensive they're a real treat.. but they're out of the stores by Christmas. So I bought some on sale and am storing them in the cold (but not freezing) garage.. figuring St. Nicholas' Day is close enough that will work.

We do our stockings on St. Nicholas day, so all that is in them is chocolate.

For babies Santa gives one or two nice toys that will fit into the stocking.

Santa gives every child in our household a classic children's book (the baby always gets a cloth or board book). Other stocking stuffers vary but there is always fruit and some sweets (feasting items). Favorite stocking stuffers are things like beads,

If the baby is too young for fruit and sweets, they will receive another slightly larger toy (past toys have included stuffed animals, balls, soft cars, small activity toys, rubber duckies ).

I must admit that we were short of money when my oldest was a toddler so   I just put in a couple of toys I had picked up second hand in her stocking. She didn't care.
