Has anyone experienced this?
Friends of ours are having this problem with their sons. They share a room together and the older brother often wakes his younger brother in the middle of the night or early morning, wanting to play. The 4 yr old is not happy about this!
I think this problem has been going on for months maybe years and the parents can't make him stop.
We thought about reducing treats like tv, computer, sweets but these things are already very limited. All the ideas I came up with they've already tried.
The other night they 'threatened' to make the 8 yr old sleep on his own downstairs as there's no other bedroom available. Not sure if this happened.
Perhaps someone here would have any suggestions?

Positive behavior reinforcement? Maybe they could start a chart and and give stickers/stars for the nights he doesn't wake his brother up. He could work toward a treat- doesn't have to be anything expensive, making cookies with mom, ice cream cones at McDee's are only $1.
So a certain # of nights = a treat?

I would start with WHY is the 8 yr old waking up? Solve that and if the 8 yr old is asleep there's no one to wake the 4 yr old.

Thank you Barbara for the prayers
Thanks Jen and Jodie for the suggestions, I will pass them on to the family concerned.
The parents do a star chart for certain positive behaviour but I don't think they've given rewards depending on specific quantity.
The 8 yr old has always had more difficulty sleeping compared to the 4yr old, waking up during the night more frequently. He used to wake 3 times a night until he was 3, since I don't have children that age yet I'm not sure if that is frequent or not. Apparently he wants to play when he wakes up but yes there must be a reason for waking in the first place.

I would remove all playthings from the bedroom, make the room purely for sleeping. If the room has no stimulus in it, he might be less likely to wake. I wouldn't put him downstairs, who knows the mischief he might get into.
