I just have to thank you all for your prayers for Charlie. He came to me the other day and said he wanted to go to Confession. He followed that with the statement that he doesn't want to go to Hell! (Not what a mother wants to hear ) But this is a child who has refused the Sacrament for months, and even before that always had to be forced to go.
I am so hopeful!

Molly,
I don't have a teen...but your post reminded me of some conversations I've had with other mothers and my mother and aunt. Sometimes "fear of the Lord" starts as fear of hell. God can and does work this way. Think of Ninevah...40 days and it will be destroyed! People were scared and got on their knees.
I have some cousins that all practice their faith now...but there were times (esp. teenage and early 20s) that they crossed and toed the line, but couldn't "leave" because of that healthy fear of eternal punishment. That got them through the rough times...and now their faith is deeper and stronger.
It's not the ideal, and I'll keep praying that he has the right motivation, but it's still good news.

Oh, this is great news! He knows that forgiveness is waiting for him!
I'm in tears, truly. I'm so thankful that Charlie is thinking of the state of his soul.

That is wonderful, Molly! I'm so glad to hear it. I have heard a priest say that fear of hell is a good motivation--not perfect, as Jenn points out, but it does the job.

Gotta start somewhere..let the graces come!!
Still praying for Charlie and offering my masses for him along with other teens
There is always hope...
...raising teens makes me think of how much God loves us unconditionally even while we are sinning ...waiting with open arms for us to turn to Him.
My family enjoys Charlie's visits and I think he is a great young man on an awesome journey (and you and Court get to share in it for a while) but always with your prayers and love. I often remind my troubled teen that God has a great plan for her.
"When we pray, the voice of the heart must be heard more than the proceedings from the mouth." St. Bonaventure

at Bridget's comment. Wouldn't that be amazing?
Glad to hear he's going to confession. I caught the tail-end of the Chesterton show last night on EWTN and the host was saying that with the advent of Freud, psychoanalysis began to overtake confession. It got me thinking about how powerful confession can be and how priceless a good confessor is. I hope Charlie experiences all the graces of a good confession. And if he does AND he becomes a priest, can you imagine what a good confessor he would be? God has a plan .

That is wonderful news, Molly, and very, very hopeful. A holy priest I know said that the three most powerful aids to remaining a faithful Catholic were the Miraculous Medal, regular Confession and the willingness to put your life into Our Lady's hands. Charlie is making a great start. As for fear of Hell, that is a very valid motive for repentence, though not perfect. Never mind. Baby steps!
Jane.

I have actually suspected a call to the priesthood for him. He has said things like "God can't make me become a priest!" on several occasions. Where does that come from unless he is actually feeling some sort of calling towards it? I would think most kids wouldn't even have a thought like that.
He would make an incredible priest, he is so charismatic and likable. He is also very handsome which while certainly not at the top of the requirements list does help to draw people to listen to him, especially the younger crowd.
Praying for God's will!

Oh Yay! This is such good news, and SO encouraging!!! Remember St. Augustine and Saint Monica, his mother? I always think of you and your son when I think of them. And I have been asking for their intercession for both of you. Saint Monica
