Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

My 5yo dd has recently discovered the joy of whistling, and boy does she enjoy it.

Trouble is, it drives everyone else ab.so.lute.ly bonkers.

We've tried a rule that she's only allowed to whistle outside -- but she forgets all the time and it seems mean to punish her for that. Meanwhile, the noise sensitive siblings are going bananas, or starting their own rival singing/whistling/shouting noises...

Any advice?

My 5 yo whistling son has just started also. But at least it replaced his humming habit....

I have a 7 yr old doing that. We try the "not in the house" rule....it works about as well at our house as it does at yours, lol.

But this is the same child with two settings--on (FULL) and off. Indoors or out (and no, no hearing problems--she's been tested).

Maybe we ought to just get them together on our trampoline here... Let them wear themselves out...
Whistling....lol...maybe the OK winds will carry the noise away...

Same issue here. Same tactics. Same results.
I'm no help, I know.

Thanks everyone! Glad to know we're not the only ones plagued by the whistles -- that actually helps even in the absence of a magic solution...

It seems to be something some children seem to go through. I don't recall Lily going through it, but she does know how to whistle, just doesn't seem to think of it as something to do whenever..where-ever...

Of course, there's nothing like hearing your dc whistling along during Mass (truly, it was in tune with the song we were singing at the time, but still. LOL).

When I was a little girl, my old aunt used to tell me that when girls whistle - the Blessed Mother cries. I haven't thought about that in many, many years. Thanks for the bringing back that memory. No help here, never had a whistler.

There's also 'A whistling woman and a crowing hen are neither fit for God nor men'!!

I think my sensitive little 5yo would be traumatised by that and Mary's aunt's saying, though!

Could she chew gum until the whistling habit is broken? One can't really do both at the same time.

I am so relieved to see your post! My 5y/o girl also just learned to whistle (which kind of makes me laugh, because I can't whistle!). It makes me crazy - she seems to do it my ear all the time and I'm the one who is noise sensitive!
She was going to town in Mass the other day just because she was bored and I had to nip that in the bud, but other than that I haven't found any way to make her stop!!
