Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

My little daughter just skinned herself while playing on the driveway. She has African American skin and the burn-spot looks white. I called the pediatrician and a few others and haven't gotten anyone on the phone. She is not bleeding heavily. I just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing something -- something that I should do to protect her skin while it heals. I've washed the area delicately and applied a triple antibiotic ointment.

Helen,

Did you get in touch with your pediatrician today?

My 3 little kids are bi-racial with the youngest being very dark complected. It has been my experience that their wounds heal the same as my white kids although the wounds appear to last longer because it takes a while for the pigmentation to return. I have found that keeping their skin moist has been crucial to healthy skin. I moisturize their entire little bodies twice a day with a high quality creme lotion.

I hope she's feeling better today.

Helen, I second what Waverly said. Lots of moisture. We had a deep scrape on dd's elbow once and kept it from scarring by applying 3x antibiotic ointment 3 times a day. Anything less and they scar.
I remember the first time dd fell and the scrape was deeper than the pigment--she was very upset about "When my bwown come back, Mama?" It does seem to take a long time. hope your little one is doing fine now.

Thanks Liz and Waverly
I'm trying to keep the minor scrape moist -- But she is picking at it already!! I've covered it again with a bandaid to prevent her from scratching it. The cut is on her face so it is worrying.

I have to admit.. when I first posted, I was wondering if my daughter needed a skin graft
