We usually begin homeschooling right after Labor Day and follow a traditional school year. This year I'm expecting a new baby in mid Sept--when we'd normally be a couple weeks into the new school year.

The children are somewhat excited to get back to homeschooling when the neighbor children and older siblings go back to school, but then again I don't want to start only to stop right away. My babies have been early, late and on-time--so I might be waiting all of September for this child to make her debute or Labor Day could take on a new meaning this year.

My original plan was to homeschool lightly throughout the summer, but I needed a break and have been very tired with this pregnancy. I'm wondering what some of you would do under these circumstance. Postpone the formal homeschool start until a little while after the baby? or just go ahead and start, then take a brief maternity break whenever the baby arrives?

I think I would start them. When the baby comes, the older ones could continue on some stuff on their own (and take care of your little ones) and then start everyone back up again when you are up to it.

I am due in mid sept too and we decided to start last week. I am trying to get 3 or 4 weeks in before the baby is due and then take a little time off after (the amount depends on how I am feeling and how crazy the kids are getting). We will be taking another break mid oct when my dh comes home on R&R. I have just decided that this year will be full of breaks and we will definately going into the summer to get finished, but I am ok with that and so are the kids.

Thank you, Jess and LLMom, for your replies. I talked with my husband and, (like both of you who recommended starting early,) he thinks we should start next Monday. We have all the books, and I planned to simplify the first half of the school year with just the basics anyway, so I guess we're ready to go....

Yikes! I don't even have much time for my usual start of the school year jitters! It's probably better that way.

If you are like me, it will help pass the time for those last few weeks. The waiting for a new baby can be so hard for me. Being super busy helped.
