Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Somehow I have recently discovered these two sanity savers:

1. The String Box
I put out a small plastic box filled with different lengths of ribbon, string, twine, yarn, etc. Really it was just a box I started throwing odd bits in. Then one day when my ds asked for a piece of string (which he seems to require on a daily basis), he said, "Oh- I'll just get my own from the string box".
GET MY OWN. Those are magic words for a mom to hear. So our string box was born. I LOVE this box.

2. Birthday Bag
As birthdays get nearer, it seems like I can hardly take my dc into a store without them lingering *forever* in the toy aisle scoping out potential toys they might want. So one day when dd was certain she couldn't live without a particular toy, I told her if she *really* wanted it, we could put it in her birthday bag. But when the bag was full, that was it. So now when the whining commences, I ask if the item is worthy to take up space in the birthday bag. Quite often it is not. I keep all the receipts in the birthday bag, so if interest wanes the item can be returned.

Kind of takes some of the surprise away from birthdays, but it has spurred some interesting conversations and does get the kids thinking....
