My dd is 3 and picks her nose. One of her nostrils is just filled with dark red, crusting and sometimes oozing, blood and boogers. I feel so bad for her. It's such a 'silent' habit, though, KWIM? I rarely see her actually doing it but I know that for it to heal she's going to have to leave it alone for many days.
What practical things can I do?

A saline spray will keep it moist and perhaps will lessen the need to pick. You can also dab a little vaseline with a q-tip just inside to clean it out and promote healing.
You can't really stop the habit at this age, but if you can try to be proactive and help her blow and keep her nose pretty clean, it might lessen the habit.

yeah, Molly said just what I was going to say.. the crud and the dryness will be irritating and probably lends itself to her picking MORE.. so getting it cleaned out and moist and the vasoline (or simliar) tends to help keep it moist more than just saline.
This may also be something to tell her to come to you.. and for a while you drop everything and help her use saline and then reapply the vasoline.. Way different but I have a girlie that when she was little if her hair bugged her at all she'd find scissors and cut it.. and so we made that deal.. and for a while I would trim her hair immediately on being asked.. because it kept her from "taking it into her own hands" as she grew of course we were able to delay a bit or set a date or such.. but at first.. it was a drop everything and help.

Our ped gave us bactoban to use since sometimes the bleeding is the result of a mild infection.

Thank you. It is still raw and bloody. I've taken to putting Neosporin on it since it has that same moisturizing effect but maybe will help with the healing a bit. Poor thing. It's such a vicious cycle of the picking - bothering her - picking -bothering her...

My oldest son (now 6) had that problem (frequent picking resulting in nosebleeds several times a week) for a couple of years until he was diagnosed with allergies. Since he started taking allergy meds and a nasal spray daily, the problem has for the most part disappeared.
