can you help me get started here? I want to make our own, w/o MOTC/MOTH both of which i browsed through from a friend, but found to be waaaayyy to obsessive for me. I need pics for non-readers. anyone make their own? sorry so choppy, as usual, nak!

Lisa--I have not accomplished this yet, but have a plan to take photos of the steps to certain chores, paste them onto lined index cards, include written instructions on the back, laminate them and put them on one of those ring holders for my non-readers to use...so if the job was dusting in the living room, first there would be a photo of the dusting cloths in the drawer where they can find them, then a photo of the furniture polish in the cabinet where they can find it, then photos of each of the pieces of furniture they need to need to clean with small sticker arrows pointing out the surfaces that need to be wiped or polished. Let me know if you get it done and how it works, maybe it'll be the motivation I need to make that project happen.

I used the CHC chore pictures from the Kindergarten (I think, maybe it was 1st grade) curriculum that showed a child making her bed, a child brushing his teeth, picking up toys, etc. I had each of the children color the pictures that represented their own chores. Then I laminated them and stuck velcro on the back. I also laminated a 9 x 12 piece of construction paper divided with black marker into six spaces (each large enough to hold one chore picture) and with a title, something like "Matthew's Chore To Do", across the top and another matching one entitled "Matthew's Finished Chores" (or "I did it!" or something along those lines). When the chore was not yet done for the day, it was stuck with velcro in one of the squares on the top piece of paper. When it was completed, the child moved it to a corresponding dot on the bottom piece. I posted these next to their beds, and it worked great. Wish I had a pic for you, but even if I ran upstairs and took it, I wouldn't know how to post it here! If you don't have the CHC curriculum, the kids could look through magazines for pictures of beds, toothpaste, toys, etc. and use those to make the cards, or simply draw their own pictures.

I know I have seen some chore card type pics around the blogosphere somewhere. I will poke around later and see what I can find. I think it would be great if we could work together on this. This is something I really need at my house.

I had some that I made from a site that had pictures for non-readers/LD kids. I will look around and see if I can find them.

I went looking not too long ago and couldn't find exactly what I was looking for. I did find this site though and it has little pictures for different chores. I cut them out and put them on little plastic cards we had around here from something. They work great. Some of the pictures I had to draw myself because I couldn't find one that worked. This site will actually generate a chore chart for you after you type in what you want. I've used that in the past but this time I'm trying the little cards and they work better.
I don't use chore packs. I use a bulletin board instead. Each child has a morning hook, an afternoon hook, and an envelope hanging on the board that they put their finished chores in. I hang the cards representing their chores on the hooks. They get breakfast after their "morning hook of chores" is finished and we have tea time after their "afternoon hook of chores is finished". Food is a major motivator here. They love the little cards but if I didn't make them do their chores before they eat, they would never get them done.
I wish I could figure out how to post a picture here. It's hard to explain, but it works very well!
