I am one week post c-section today and trying to ease back into real life without over doing it. I'm wearing the baby in the Moby for the first time today. I'm mostly sitting and am in no pain but am wondering what is reasonable for baby wearing after a c-section? How do you know if you're doing too much? If you're not in pain, do you assume you're okay, or would you start with a certain length of time and then gradually do more? I never think I'm over doing it because I feel fine but then everyone is always fussing that I'm doing too much....

Hi Colleen,
Can you believe how fast that first week goes? My big indicator of overdoing, assuming there is no pain, is bleeding. One day (about 2 1/2 weeks) I felt great and decided to vacuum. Not long after I finished I felt the gush (I know--yuk--tmi). I stayed in bed the rest of the day. The same thing happened on some early outings.
But yes, I'd suggest starting small. Just wearing baby around the house is certainly enough activity for one week postpartum from a sixth c/s! But I'd take him off and just lay together in bed quite often. I bought a Moby this time and it's so comfortable, but you have to tie it around the most sensitive part (or at least it was for me) and I don't recommend having pressure on your lower ab for long at this point.
Not sure if any of this helps. Enjoy these first days! Snuggle up and rest as much as possible--babymoons end far too soon. Kelly will be 4 weeks old tomorrow and I already want to rewind and do it all over again!!

With my 7 sections, I did (finally!)learn to really take it easy for a full two weeks. I was always so ready to jump back into the full swing as soon as I started to feel a little better, but I learned I recovered more quickly when I tried to take it easy a little bit past the time when I felt "up to it". I would limit carrying the baby around about a week longer...just sit and snuggle! Hey, soon enough you'll be running all around after your big family ! Let them have the chance to serve you for a few more days.

I always feel rotten for a good two weeks, so I'm not sure my experience is a good gauge for you. After two weeks, I would wear the baby for short periods of time. If I bled too much, I knew I overdid it. With my last baby, however, I realized that I ought to have taken it easier for longer when I had the chance even if I wasn't feeling that bad... because it took me longer to heal.

My concern for you, Colleen, is that even if you feel great you can still do harm to your body. Your body is healing from major surgery and needs plenty of rest time. Doing too much now can mean problems later on. I've had six c-sections and have had longer recoveries the more I've had. Doctors say the only thing you should pick up is your baby, so I think that as long as you are comfortable wearing your baby you should be fine. Listen to what everyone else is saying and relax, take it easy, easing back into life will come way too soon.
God bless you and your family.

Just take it easy on your torso... try to do high carries if possible. A ring sling would be ideal for you right now.
www.sleepingbabyproductions.net sells very reasonably priced ring slings and Jan has EXCELLENT customer service and quick shipping. And she is far an away the best seller of ring slings in the under $100 market. Excellent craftsmanship.
A nice linen sling would be great in the summer... and you can get a super snug, high fit with a ring sling.

Thanks ladies...I've been trying to slow down more than I was when I posted this question the other day. More than baby blues in the first few days, I'm prone to get a little manic about needing to get things "back to normal"...then I take a deep breath and relax again. I have been wearing the baby for about an hour every day in a high kangaroo carry in the Moby D...but I am sitting and usually reclining in my chair and dozing while I do it. That way we get the snug wearing time without too much activity...I do have a really nice linen ring sling too...maybe if I want to move around a bit, I'll switch to that for the next couple of weeks.

Glad to hear this, Colleen. I had a feeling you would try to do too much too soon.
My niece had her new baby last week (first C-section) and today, as we were all sitting under the patio at her parent's house, she came outside carrying the baby in the carseat. Her husband, father, mother, my oldest son and daughter, and I were all sitting there and she could have asked any of us to get the carseat, but didn't.
Women!!! We do, do, do and it's hard to back off.
