Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Would you let your dd7 Brownie Scout go on an overnight sleepaway 2 day camp to Seaworld, which is in the next state over, where neither you nor DH is able to be a chaperon this time?

You trust the Leaders, and there are nine girls in the troop, so it would be three to a Leader, with 3 Leaders attending. It's not just your troop, it is a Council-wide Brownie Only Event with chartered buses, etc.

But...your scout is the youngest in the troop by a year (she was on the cusp age wise - already a member when they changed the ages, so even tho she is technically first grade, she is a Brownie, even though if she was just joining a troop now she would be a daisy - although she would be a Brownie by the time the trip took place - it isn;t until Sept.) Also her very best friend in the whole wide world is also in the troop.

Out of the 9 girls, there is one other girl who may not be going. All the rest are.

But...let's just say maybe one of your other children is having some major problems away at college right now, so you don't know if it is rational that every ounce of you is saying "NO WAY!!!!!!!!!!" at the very idea. Maternal instinct could be working in overdrive. Give me perspective.

Would you let your dd7 go?

at age 7?
no.
trust, location, group, and so forth wouldn't matter
to me 7 yrs old is too young to travel anywhere sans a parent, esp over night and out of state, imho.
for my kids anyways.
i know many people wouldn't have a problem with it
i know many people would also probably think I'm a paranoid, isolating, helicopter parent.
and my dd who just turned 8 would probably scream and whine and cry and say how unfair it is

and I'd still say no
but that's just me.

See...I think I feel the same way. Why do they need to do these things so young? If you are taking out of state overnight trips at 7 - what experiences are they saving until later? Why can't they just be....little, while they are?

but...as I said, most every other one of the parents doesn't seem to have an issue. It is a Council wide Brownie Thing. So, not just our troop, but Brownie Aged Troops from the whole region.

So I didn't know if it was just me. Or just other issues am dealing with. Or what.

my dd wants to go - but not so much so that she would carry-on if we said no (that just isn't her temperment. she would just be sad and the bottom lip will quiver as she tries hard not to cry. which is harder for me to say no to sometimes...but that is more because she will be missing her friend than actually missing out on the trip, I think...)

thanks Martha.

That's way too young IMO, also. I was thinking this theother day, I think the reason so many parents out there wouldn't have a problem with this, or letting their children wander off by themselves in public places, etc. is that they daily send their kids off to be in the care of other people. Their kids are away from them a good part of their life, so sending them off to something like this doesn't feel abnormal to them.

You are not wrong to feel this way in protecting and caring for your daughter. It is our God hiven job to keep our Little Ones under our wings so to speak, until they are truly old enough and mature enough to guard themselves, which a 7 yo, 10 yo, even 12yo is not.

I would not, and I have not let my kids this young go to things like this---and the things my kids were involved in were not a state away.

Last time you checked, wasn't there some really fun family thing that was planned that day/weekend?

See - we actually considered taking a family trip to the same place so she could meet up with her troop and do the activities, but we would, ya know, be there too.....

No way, here too!

Have peace on this one, too, Laura, and keep that sweet kiddo at home! We'll all have a "our 7 year olds are at home" party that weekend, k?

Nope. 7 is too young IMO.

I think going as a family and letting her meet up would be a good compromise. That, or just staying home. I wouldn't let my almost 9yo go either.

no. it almost sounds worse to me that it IS a big event with lots of other troops there, etc. more chaos! than if she were just going as more of a guest of a family.
that being said (no tomato, please!) I HAVE sent ds when he was gulp 7 1/2, 8, and now 9 to soccer tournaments up to 3 hours away from home without dh or myself.
However, I would NEVER have done this with my second son who is now 13, and right now on a confirmation retreat- I'm worried about him at that!!
So for me, part of it is the individual child.
Thomas goes to tournaments with a few select families with whom we have cultivated friendship and trust with.
They take him to mass, get him to bed at a decent time, and basically care for him as we would.
(and check in often!)
if it is an event that you think you all can attend and enjoy, OR all skip and enjoy! than just do that!!
