I am confused and need some out of the area advice!
My ds Joe has completed driver's ed and even taken his behind the wheel test. He can get his lisence after 9 months and 50 hours behind wheel with parents, so this will be in Aug. (he turns 16 not til July anyway)
So.......we have two Catholic homeschooling dad friends who are insurance agents, and most homeschooling families we know use them.
What we are hearing is that we should NOT insure our teen driver, and that these families do/are not, at the advise of the agents.
reasoning is that it is too expensive, and mom and dad are the TRUE owners/drivers of the family vehicles, etc, and that if teen crashes, it would be no different than if I had loaned the car out to a friend to drive, etc.
does this sound right to you? I already caused a bit of a stir when I questioned this, but maybe it is standard/acceptable practice.
while it is true that ds will not have his "own" car, I'm already looking forward to the day when he can run errands/take a kid to soccer.
what do you all do?

Where we live they (and all drivers) must be insured. We add them onto our policy as another driver, not the primary driver. It was not that expensive. If you get them a private policy, it was a lot more expensive.

ok, someone just informed me that in IL the CAR must be insured, not the driver? so maybe the reason dh and I are both listed is because the title is in both of our names?

We were told that if she lives with us, she needed to be added to insurance. If my Mother were to visit, for instance, and were to use our car, that that is different. But since our daughter lives with us, and would be driving, even if infrequently (even if it just to the corner to get milk...our horrible accident where the kid ran the light and smashed our van was less than a 1/4 mile from our house...) she needed to be added once she got her license (not on her permit.)
I would call and get the actual laws of your state.
Yes, adding a teen is crazy-crazy expensive. But if something were to happen, you would want to be sure what you were doing was legal, and just going with "well the agent said..." w/o checking into the laws yourself isn't a good idea, i don't think...
I am sorry people got icky when you questioned it.

see, this is what I thought/am thinking.
and....  I think our IL budget has been cut due to mishandling of state finances  and everytime I call the number I get a recording that they are closed.
(office of mandatory auto insurance!!) I need to google and search for a broader category....

yeah, I'm still getting conflicting "advice". even a friend who is an attorney is saying "don't buy insurance"!!
I want to do what is right, you know, and am having a hard time believing all of these people might possibly be breaking the law??
Yet the prospect of saving ds (who would be paying) about 80.00 a month sounds so good.
I guess these parents figure that if the DMV accepts their insurance card, than it is another confirmation it is ok.
when kids go in to get their liscence they must provide proof of insurance, and supposedly these kids show the card which has their parents names on it, no problem!!
I'm so confused...

Well in some ways if the insurance company is saying.. we cover a sometimes teen driver driving your car that is insured in your name.. well.. as long as the insurance saying they're covering them then you'd think you could trust that.

yay! I got through to someone at the local DMV department and we don't need to add him on to the insurance.
it would only be if a title was in his name (ie he purchased and owned his own car).
whew!
I was driving myself crazy and really was struggling thinking that so many might be breaking the law 
so to sum it up, the car must be insured.
thanks for letting me work this out here...
I guess every state really is different....

You will now be the envy of everyone with teen drivers in states that force you to put the teen on insurance whether they drive or not.. and in some cases whether they have their license or not.

Yes, because in Maryland you must add teen drivers with licenses to your insurance policy. Ds is stalling on getting his license and I'm aiding and abetting - extra expense will be $100 per month once he is licensed. (We don't need to add him while he has a learner's permit.)
