Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I'm quite sure I'm the only person to ever post with potty training issues, right?

Ok, well, my son is 4 1/2 years old. I'm typically very much a "you'll do it when you are ready to do it" kind of person, but holy cow. 4 1/2.

He potty trained around his 3rd birthday as far as going pee on the potty. He will even stay dry at night most all the time. But he has never, ever pooed on the potty. We have tried everything from ignoring it and just giving him a diaper to refusing to give him a diaper and then scrubbing it out of his pants to bribing him with different things. Right now we are on a run of ignoring it combined with low-pressure bribery. He is not constipated or anything like that and never has been. He just will not do it. He's not terrifically verbal for a 4 year old, so I'm not really able to figure out what the issue is. He just won't do it. He'll sit on the toilet and say he's going to go, but in the end he just can't/won't do it. Any advice, anyone? Sympathy? Anyone ever have one that potty trained at this age or later? The really fun times are when he poops in a diaper during rest time or something and then takes it off and tracks it all over his room.

I'm right there with you in attitude and experience.

He'll be 5 end of June and come heck or high water will not use the tiolet for poo. Even if given a baby lax as ped recommended.

I used to laugh that I was 95% confident he would not get married in a diaper. Well it's not funny anymore and I'm starting to think that it's a good think diapers come in wedding white.

I'd also appreciate some insights and sympathy.

My 6 yo did the same thing at 4, lots of sympathy!

I made him "help" me clean any messes he made. I didn't scold but just told him he was old enough to clean up after himself. I would always comment how much easier it would be if he just went on the potty...He hated to help clean the mess and after ward would ask for that convenient diaper, which I would refuse. I allowed him to wear Pull-Ups to bed, but underwear all day.

I would also refuse to let him go to special outings until he went on the potty. Also if he went #2 outside, he had to stay in for the rest of the day. He was just being lazy and once I got tough, he trained in a matter of weeks and would laugh about going in his pants. He thought it was so yucky and was glad to go on the potty like a big boy.

I also bribed with his favorite candy...

Yeah, I've always said that to people when giving potty training advice. It was very easy to do when my oldest pretty much potty trained overnight at 2 1/2!

One of mine that trained later.. just did not want to use it for some inexplicable reason. So I just tried to "arrange" it so that he couldn't help himself but use it. I started watching to be able to catch him and get him on the potty (seeing if there's a particular time of day or watching him for early cues) once we were able to get him on the potty for that first time.. it was like.. oh, this isn't so bad.. and went very quickly at that point.
