Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I let one of my dc try out a Karate class today.

As I sat there, watching, I heard lots of "yells" between the instructor and students. I wondered if it was okay with the teachings of the Church? This class is taught at the 'Y', by the DH of a friend I went to highschool with. I know she is a Christian, but not Catholic.

My DC *loved* it, and wants to go back.

Any thoughts?

I'm curious too - because my son has begun talking about doing something like this. He has several older friends that do Tae-Kwon-Do - and I know it was done in a very devout Catholic school as an afterschool elective. I don't know about karate itself though. I observed the class a few times as I ran the after school care program and sometimes all but one of my children were in there, so she and I would sit and watch. The Tae-Kwon-Do didn't seem to have much "yelling" and the instructor emphasized self-control and really tied in the Catholic faith (being a devout Catholic herself). This was one of the very few (exactly 2) schools I would ever consider sending my son to, so I feel I could trust their judgement on that one....

but I am very curious what others know.

Bella--Here's a good thread where Angie, who knows a lot about this topic, shared some good thoughts. It's worth visiting.

Colleen,
Thank you! I did a search, before I posted, but somehow missed Angie's! I found it very helpful! I think also, since this Karate is at the 'Y', it is less intense then at a Martial Arts center.

I took Tai Chi,yrs ago,and loved it! It still benefits me to this day!

*Taking note to never cross Angie!

Thanks,again!

Interestingly enough, we also had a TKD instructor who was Catholic, and HE was up front with all his students/parents about that, so they wouldn't be EXPECTING any kind of spiritual stuff in the program!

We aren't currently enrolled, but both my older sons enjoyed it for several years, and one of my younger sons keeps asking to begin!

My two oldest take a Karate (Kyokoshinkai) at the Y, and it's been very good for self-discipline. This is a very rigorous type of Karate, but there is very little yelling. Since they've been enrolled, we've become acquainted with another Catholic family enrolled, as well as three other homeschooling families. It has been a positive experience all around.

We do TKD and our instructors (well at least the owner and primary instructor) is Catholic. The only spiritual thing they have the class do is to still and meditate. He tells them to clear their minds, that's about it. I tell my kids that's a good time to say a prayer, and they do (or at least they say they do!)

My boys have taken martial arts for over 5 years. They are in Taekwondo with a christian instructor. Not Catholic but Christian. Nothing weird happens there and they have learned so much and are very physically fit and have great stretching abilities from it. We'll have our girls take TKDO as well when we move to VA and they are old enough. The physical fitness, self-defense and respect taught has been good for our boys.

Thanks,to all of you, for sharing! I think I am going to talk to the instructor to find out what type of Karate this is-just curious.

After reading all of your positive experiences, I am thinking about approaching our DD, to see if she would be interested. Maybe we'll make it a prerequisite to dating!

Angie-I'm glad you got a good laugh!

A few years ago Fr. Leo Patalinghug spoke at a catholic conference in Raleigh (Ignited by Truth) and demonstrated his Tae Kwon Do techniques for us. My son had been practicing TKD for about a year and was sorry he wasn't at the conference to see it!

Fr. Leo also has a website, www.gracebeforemeals.com.

Fr. Leo is great! I heard him talk at NACHE years ago. He showed how he Christianizied his martial art practice.

Bella, when I saw my dd break a board with her foot, I thought, "Now I can feel safe sending her out in the world." Unfortunately, none of mine are taking classes now. I do think it is really good for them, but finding a good instructor is key.
