Lots of ideas for girls and lots of not made in China. I need help with ideas for a 6 yo boy. I have a vague recollection of some military surplus stuff (canteens, mess kits, helmets, entrenching tools) in a catelogue that also sold American girl type dolls. I cannot remember the catelogue name and was going to look at some of that - just don't remember how pricey it was or was not. I'm open to other ideas for a very active 6 yo who thinks he can do whatever his brothers do - and usually he is in the middle of it. He already uses real tools.

That was probably the Vision Forum Catalogue.
Magic Cabin sells a pretty cool shield, crown and sword (soft) as well as a cool Robin Hood costume. My oldest loved costumes at this age. Also check Hearthsong and Highlights toy catalogues. I've had good luck with them over the years.

Janet, what are his interests?
My 7yods is into all things sports,vehicles,and art. So easy!
Yesterday I was at a craft store, and saw that Klutz has a "Superhero" kit. You make your own cape with it?

my almost 6 yr old boy.. is getting a sword/shield and hotwheels and a rug with streets to run the hotwheels on.
And for his birthday I have a couple movies with dogs (Air Bud and Eight Below) and a bullfrog webkinz (his favorite)..

My problem is that my 6 yo has so many older brothers that he uses real tools, already has a wooden sword and all kinds of medieval costuming (sisters have made this kind of stuff for him for years)and armor (brothers have made this out of poptops or tomatoe can lids) and we have legos, blocks, trains and that stuff from when the other boys were smaller. My husband still had his tinker toys and Lincoln logs from childhood. This boy is into all things military and can rattle off military aircraft by name as well as the 14 yo but I have to be careful. He is most likely to modify something for dangerous use. Oh and I saw the things about marshmellow guns. We already have pvc pipe weaponry that the boys all made and I'm sure he'd come up with something like the sharpened pencils to fire from it (I can already think of them carving wooden ammo or using marbles or pieces of rock) He'd love it but I'm a bit hesitant on this one though we'll see what dh says tonight.
He likes games but between what we've accumulated over the years for the older boys and girls and what my dh had saved (in perfect condition) from his childhood, we really do not need another game. Oh, and he is not a self entertainer, but has to be in the middle of brothers, so he also has done (with significant help from brothers) model WWII aircraft - they re-enact the battles in real life or in displays from the ceiling. I don't think there are any other models that are built to withstand his realism. I'd like to wait on a few until he is actually old enough to build it himself.
Oh and they all make paper airplanes using an Encyclopedia of Military Aircraft - these kinds of books have specifications as to wingspan, length, etc. and they somehow design paper planes using cardstock from this that really do resemble the real thing. They've been using rubber bands to launch them and see if they perform similiarly to the real things.
Bottom line - we honestly don't need another thing in this house but of course you want one item to have his name on it.
I'm leaning towards something on vision forum (thanks for the reminder for the name of the company,Books) from the WWII vintage (possibly the entrenching tool) since that is the current favorite thing, and will give him some bargaining power with older brothers when they negotiate in tunnel building - not that this very assertive child needs any help with negotiating. I'll have to look closely and make sure it isn't really, really sharp but still sharp enough to be a real tool. He will undoubtedly forget and run with it or jump from rock to ground as he chases the other side through the woods.
The child would honestly be thrilled with just about any plane, helicopter, weaponry, etc. but I really don't want more little pieces of junk as once it comes in my children never part with it, they simply turn it into something else - ie save the parts and pieces to use for some later creation and I really do want to be on top of the junk. They honestly even have old damaged CDs that they use for frisbees or something. Creativity is not lacking around here - but they don't like kits or instructions and they tend to take high tech toys apart to see how they work  .
