Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Does anyone know the most recent information about breastfeeding an infant before surgery? My ds Peter James has to have hernia surgery Monday. My hospital says the baby must fast for 4 hrs. I just want to make sure that is exactly what he must go through...poor little guy. He is only 5 weeks old and the first few feedings of the day are always heavy ones.

Thanks so much for your help!

That sounds about right I know it is hard but the reason they do this is to prevent him from vomiting and having any of it end up in his lungs while he is sedated that could lead to pnuemonia and other bad things.   So 4 hours though hard definately beats the alternative and I promise he won't remember Annie

If he is allowed to have clear fluids he can nurse as breastmilk is considered a clear fluid. I would ask if he is allowed clear fluids and then I would double check with an LLL leader in your area (or you could PM Mary Ann, momtomany, as she is a leader). Four hours of fasting isn't too bad, but I agree I wouldn't want to put my lo through it if it weren't necessary.

Good luck and prayers for your Peter!

Beth

Oh, poor little man. I'll bet his first feed after surgery will be blissful for him. We're praying for you all here, and especially took his surgery and his doctors with us to Mass last night.

Blessings,

Donna, I'm a newly retired LLL Leader of 12 years. I do not think a 4-hr. fast for an infant is now called for as necessary. I'm not sure where to point you except to check with your local LLL area network to get the references so you can talk to the doctor about this. 4 hours is an eternity for a newborn with the stomach the size of a walnut, give or take.

You can get in touch with your local LLL group and their area professional liason thru the www.llli.org site.

HTH!
Praying!
JoAnna

the children's hospital here says 2 hours, but most of the nurses will tell informally 90 min is fine.
I would not feel good about 4 hours, even for a 5 MONTH old!!

When my twins were little, 6 weeks, one had to have anethesia for an MRI. 4 hours was recommended at that time due to her small size, and it was 4 hours for clear liquid. We were able to give her a pacifier at those times, but it was hard. She only really fussed for about the last 1/2 hour. It was also the only time we ever put her in a baby swing. The hospital had one for us to use.

If you do have to do the 4 hours, just try to have extra hands for if baby wants to nurse, a carrier for him to feel secure.

He will make it through. Do not be alarmed if he does not want to nurse right when he wakes up.

We just had this surgery for our littlest one last month. It was the same 4 hr fast. Surgery was quick and he nursed right away in recovery. I think it was hardest for me:) He had a spinal block for post op comfort which really helped keep him calm and content for about 24 hours before the soreness kicked in. We also opted to do an exploratory incision on the side without the hernia because over 40% have the weakness on both walls and it could mean a repair down the road for the other side. Both my dh and his twin had inguinal hernias as infants - just curious, do you have a family history of it??

Thank you all so much for all of your help and advice!

My eldest dd (one of the twins) had it on one side...other than that...we did not see it in any of the other children.

Peter James has it on both sides so that will add up to two small incisions.

I am nervous for him and his comfort to be sure, but I know he is in good hands.

I did call the LLL and they said 4 hour fast...
Well...keep us in your prayers for Monday morning..his surgery is scheduled for 10.

God love you,

oh good!! I knew that I wasn't imagining the 2 hours for human milk, I'm glad you included the link.
my ds Thomas has had inguinal hernia surgery twice, no fun, I've heard that the younger children are for hernia surgery, the better. (he was 7 and 8)

Praying here. My little guy had it when he weighed about 7 pounds. It was tough doing the fast - but we were told four hours too. Between the fast and the surgery and post op - make sure you can express milk so that you don't get engorged!
