High school musical? Dh wants to take dd age 11. I hate these movies. I hate when reviews rave about them and add that it is so innocent because there is only hand holding and kissing. I sometimes feel like I'm the only parent who thinks that this inappropriate. Also, (if I remember right) isn't there that one "snitty" (I know it really isn't a word) girl character. IMO too many girls act catty too early and just don't need it! Well, just wanted opinions! Sometimes around here I feel like I'm from mars! All the parents think it is an innocent movie and the girls all have this Troy character on their shirts.
I would love to have opinions. If anyone agrees with me - do you have other reasons I can throw DH's way on way I am right she shouldn't see it?

I just recently saw the first one and was floored that something that charged with "boy-girl" tension was rated G!!! It's at LEAST PG-13 in my book!!! There was no real redeeming value in the film at all, IMO. The singing wasn't great, the characters were really stereotypical, and yes, there is a very catty, manipulative young woman who treats others with disdain and outright disgust. I had difficulty watching the whole thing--kind of felt like it was two hours of my life I could never get back.
If they way they dress, the message that every young person should have a cell phone, the inane dialogue, the message that dating and the physicality that can be involved is desirable and right, and the lack of any valuable messages aren't enough, there is the underlying current of kids being smarter than adults to get one's blood boiling. (Can you tell I didn't like the movie? ) Oh, and is Troy really the type of man you'd want your DD pining after (the stereotypical hot athlete)? I pray my girls choose on more substance than that!
Ok, so this really turned into more of a vent than anything helpful I suppose. Just know you are not alone--our dds will NOT be seeing this movie.

My boys ROARED with laughter as Troy made his appearance in movie number one. ( I rented it from the bookmobile about a year ago to see what all the fuss was about) They think that he is totally NOT the athlete type in any sense of the term, and were offended that he was portrayed as such
Oh the first movie was really horrible, IMHO. Maybe I've just changed over the years with all this testosterone around, but really. please.
thankfully we will not be viewing the other ones, and my dd is too young to hear and understand what all the girls are into these days!!

Lisa,
I questioned the choice as well--definitely not chosen for his basketball skills!

I have never actually seen it, nor have my girls dd12,9 and 6. And they have NO desire to ever see it. We own nothing with any of the characters faces on them (and they are on everything ). We have seen the previews or mini segments on Disney. My eldest declared that the show "nausiates" her and her sisters followed suit. Any time she says this in public, we get shocked looks from kids and moms, alike! I don't like it for the same reasons that have been mentioned. There are 6 and 7 year old girls watching these teen romances! Innocent or not, it's not for girls under 12 or 13 IMHO.

My 12yo is really into these. I'm sad to say I bought into them being "harmless", and now she is all kinds of nuts about them. I can't wait for them to die away. I didn't have a problem with the boy/girl thing, really, it was the snotty high school stereotypical stuff that bugged me, all of a sudden my daughter started talking like a Valley Girl and none of her clothes are "cool enough" anymore. Uck. Might as well put her in public school,

Yep. Hate it. My 14yo has seen the first two -- she loved the first one for a while, but the second one was so gooby that it became kind of a joke in our house, and now she's really over it all. She has the first soundtrack, and it got listened to for a while, but not so much any more.
I really dislike the whole Disney Channel thing: these manufactured kid stars with minimal to mediocre talents, these contrived situation comedies, this endless smart-talky dialogue, these clueless adult figures. We don't have a tv, so it's not in our house on a daily basis, but the kids watch some of it at their grandmothers' when we're there. The older ones by now just sort of watch it out of habit, and know it's lame.
I mean, not that I have an opinion or anything.
Sally
