I need some gift ideas for my daughter who is turning 8 in October. My criteria are no plastic, no batteries, and no made in China. I've browsed Magic Cabin, Nova Naturals and Rosie Hippo and nothing is calling out to me.
Any suggestions???

sewing kit? cooking kit? these are things you can put together yourself so you don't have to buy some ready made kit... other crafts? beading? scrapbooking?

Following in Jodie's footsteps, I saw this mail kit and bookmarked it for gift ideas later this year--this one was made for a 4 year old, but it could be updated easily for an 8 year old.
Special art supplies are always good, of course. Or a nice outing?

When my daughter turned 10, I bought a copy of Sewing with St. Anne from Catholic Heritage Curricula and put together a sewing basket for her. It was a hit. :) The projects are simple enough that an 8yo could do quite a bit with some help.

May I second the sewing basket idea? (Excellent avatar, Melanie, by the way!)
My dd loves her sewing basket - an Easter gift when she was just barely 9 - and we have added to it over time. It sits in a place of honor because we use its resources so often!
Don't forget to add in a few extras, like a thread braid (of multicolored threads, for mending), a needle threader, retractable tape measure, etc. A small embroidery project (hoop, fabric, transfer and floss) is nice, too. Let her pick the colors of floss on a future trip to the craft store.
My daughter takes great pride in her homemaking skills - she's an excellent cook - and I've decided recently to help her start a collection of kitchen tools (she doesn't know this...she thinks they are for our home, not for her to take when she's an adult). I figure if we add a couple of utensils per year, she'll have a nice collection for her college apartment. People can give her pots, pans and appliances for graduation, and she won't starve. (Far from it!)
I love gifts that encourage our daughters to be ready for whatever the future might hold...from dissertations to diapers, it's all equally important.
