I'm new to this whole "boy" thing, LOL. The baby's first birthday is coming up, and I'd love to get him something he'd really like - and I know the relatives will also ask (although I'm hoping that they'll want to go practical - clothes, bibs - so that *I* can have the pleasure of spoiling him just this once )
But I forget what just turned 1 year olds like, and have no idea if a boy would like something different than a baby girl?
What do your kids like around that 12 month mark, especially boys?

A ball. No kidding, my thirteen month old son plays catch with himself! He'll throw a tennis ball, and I"m pretty sure says "get" (since I've said 'go get it!' after throwing it to him times before) and toddles off to get and throw it again. He's like a little puppy!
Maybe a plastic hammer so he can start banging on everything (a little more than he already does?? )

I know this is pretty obvious, but cars? Trucks. They have a lot of soft ones. My son loved, loved, loved anything with wheels. Actually, he still does.

A ball or dump truck were and are my boy's all-time favorite toys.

Just echoing all the above:
Things that roll -- balls, trucks and cars of different sizes, some kind of dump truck
Things to stack -- blocks, Lego Duplos, nesting and stacking toys
Things to bang -- Wooden bench with pegs and hammer, drum

I agree with all of the above but would also like to add that there are some things that cross genders at that age like play food, bubbles, books, things with buttons to push. Having two boys and two girls, what amazes me the most is that they will play with the same toys but play very differently with them. My oldest son used to take those little people figures and line them up and move them around while my daughter would put them in a house and make them "talk" (baby babble).
Off the topic...My youngest son did have his own soft baby doll to play with because he kept stealing his sister's dolls. I didn't mind him playing with one because of the way he played with it. He wasn't trying to be a mommy, he was the daddy! He would pick up the doll, put it on his shoulder and pat its back. Then he would make a loud burping sound and drop the doll on the ground. It cracked us up because when he was a baby, my husband looked at the burping routine as his contribution to feeding the babies. I guess my son remembered that.

Oh, I agree, Charlotte. My son loved to line things up. Those Little People and animals were always lined up in a row -- he still does that.
And I'm nodding my head in agreement with the baby doll, too. I never found one that was masculine enough to please dh, but he played with his cousins. It's a good thing to not draw the gender lines on playing house and with dolls. My mother bought us both "boy" and "girl" toys, we just played differently.

You know, Jenn, I never thought I would be one of those moms who was buying her son a baby doll (it was a very bald little doll dressed in brown and yellow) and it definitely wasn't done with any kind of feminist agenda. It was just so darn cute to see him burp that baby (and he could make some burp sounds that would have impressed a frat boy). We always made a point of telling him "you are such a good little Daddy" when he was done.

Feminist? I didn't even think that! I just see how much the children imitate their parents. Too, too sweet. I love when the reflection is wholesome, instead of seeing your bad side through your children. A baby doll brand that would be good for this age is Corolle. Very sweet. I kept eyeing the Paul Drink and Wet for potty training, but never bought it.

Oh, I wasn't saying that you implied that. Growing up in the 1970/80's, my mom was one of those women who believed in crossing gender lines when it came to children's toys just to make a point. You know...why can't girls be construction workers and boys stay home with the babies. It was more of a feminist agenda rather than inspiring creativity.

I agree with all the suggestions posted here--I have a just-turned-two year old, and his favorite toys for the last year have been a small rubber ball, a set of nesting toys, and his sister's baby doll.

Ditto everything everyone said...
I just had to comment on the lining toys up. My son does that too! Isn't that strange? I never thought anything about it being a boy thing but I never remember seeing my neice do this. My 2 yr old will line up all his cars or little people...and then mow them down with his big dump truck..but I think that's a different topic altogether. LOL

My 3yo son lines things up too,how funny! He has since he was a year old, I have pictures of him lining up his cars in long rows across the dining room floor, and he'll line up a bunch of shoes, etc.
He also has loved anything with wheels...cars, trains, construction vehicles, etc.

We got a big bucket of farm animals at Toys R Us for ds when he turned one. We still have them! They were the Animal Planet brand. We have the dinosaurs too. Those came later but both sets are still played with today. Ds was 8 in July!!
Trains and trains tracks seem to be very popular also for first birthday. I think dh would set up the track with ds at night and then the next day ds would mess it up...I mean play with it.
My sister gave ds blocks and my sil gave him huge blocks from Lillian Vernon which are cardboard. They have lasted and again used quite often.
Oh,Amy..enjoy that sweet boy. You have so many days of car and truck noises, animal sounds and roaring lions and dinosaurs ahead...I know girls can make these sounds...it just is not the same...enjoy!!!! I am so happy for you to have both your beautiful girls and your little guy.
God bless,
Marybeth
