My dd (almost 17 mo) has never taken solids well. She wouldn't eat baby food, so we waited and tried table food. Well later on (around 10 mo) we tried table food and she wouldn't eat it. Well a couple of months ago I was going to take her to the dr to see if there is anything we should do because she still refused to eat hardly anything. Then she kind of started eating a couple of things so I cancelled the appt thinking that she was finally ready and was going to start eating more. Well now we are here at almost 17 months and the only things I can get her to eat are dry cheerios, ice cream, and crackers. And when she eats those it is only a little bit. I have been back and forth about being concerned and I guess I am on the more concerned side right now. Should I make the appt again to see if she needs to see an OT for feeding issues. She is a little chub so I am not concerned about her weight or anything, just the fact that she refuses to eat anything. She won't even try it or put it to her mouth. If I try to put it in her mouth she spits it back out. She nurses voraciously still.
That leads me to my next question. Is it normal for a almost 17 mo old to nurse a billion times a day and night? She wants to nurse all the time, I mean all the time! At least she is polite about it, she signs and says please and grabs her blankie and climbs in my lap or tries to pull up my shirt. But she is nursing like a newborn so I was wondering if that is normal. On Sunday she nursed 3 or 4 times during Mass.

Hi Jess,
My 24 month old still wants to nurse constantly. My DH has had enough - esp with her night time demands. He needs his sleep. So, I am trying to wean her. She will eat some things but does not have a real interest in food. Well, maybe ice cream ! I don't think it is all that unusual. I had few others like this. All I can think is that it must taste mighty good!! LOL.

Mary, I have always thought it was funny that she liked ice cream but wouldn't eat anything else. My mom said I need to make veggie ice cream
I agree, mama's milk must taste mighty good by the way she wants it all day and all night. My dh isn't bothered by it thankfully, she doesn't wake him up

Are you sure we didn't have twins, Jess
Dominic is just shy of 19 months and he eats so VERY little and nurses a LOT. He, too, is healthy. He eats Kicks cereal and popsicles and toast. I try to get meat down him, but very often he chews it to a pulp, then spits it out.
I have had two out 8 other children who have been similar to this. One child totally grew out of it, the other is a very picky eater (at age 8). We took her to the doctor because she is very small for her age and was told she most likely has a texture problem about food. We encourage her to eat different things, but it won't be a battle ground issue for us. We have little junk food, mostly a dessert on the weekends.
Meanwhile I have literally gained a bra size and have let downs about every 2 hours if Dominic doesn't nurse.
Blessings,
Stephanie

I think maybe we did have twins Stephanie!
I have a nephew who is super picky, he will only eat like 5 things and my brother and SIL tried the "he'll eat when he gets hungry enough" thing where they offered him what everyone else was eating and figured he would eventually eat it, well he went for days without eating and got circles under his eyes. So needless to say they fix him what he will eat now hoping he'll outgrow it. I don't want my dd to be like that, but I can't force her to eat either so I have tried to be relaxed about it and offer her what I am eating and then when she refuses it, I give her what she will eat (even though she might eat maybe 5 cheerios or 1 cracker). But man will she nurse!
I have been reading "Parenting the fussy baby and the high-need child" by Dr Sears and I can see my dd in this book a lot. So it has shown me that we have to approach her in a different way. Thankfully I had already decided that I wanted to have a more AP style of parenting before she was born and it has worked well with her. But I wasn't sure of the eating and nursing things. I am glad to hear from others who have babies that are similar to my little Grace.
