Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

In an effort to save money I am once again trying to use cloth diapers. I have prefolds and I am using fleece diaper covers and a couple Motherease covers someone gave me after the birth of our last baby. It seems I need to change her every hour to keep her dry. After a nap she wakes up just soaked and crabby because she is so uncomfortable. Do all cloth diaper babies need to be change so frequently? What about long stretches like for naptime and overnight? How do you keep them comfortable and dry?

Am I missing something? I'm using a fleece soaker to line the diaper but it really hasn't made a difference. I'm new to an all-cloth diaper lifestyle, any advice? Is this typical?

Thanks!

I find prefolds soak through extremely quickly.

I use Totsbots which are made in the UK so I'm not sure if you'd find them in the US. I find them excellent -- my baby is in one all night long and it lasts better than a disposable would.

In the daytime, I usually change him after every feed, so every 2 to 4 hours, but the nappies have plenty more 'capacity' so I could probably get away with changing less often.

I'm sure that others will have some good advice about US brands to go for but I just wanted to say that I'm sure you'll find something that works.

I only use prefolds during the day and fitteds at night I also line them with a fleece liner so baby wont feel the wetness so much. But I do change him more often now I dont mind. You can use pockets too they dont seem to feel the wetness either.

When using prefolds or certain fitteds, yes - baby seems wet all the time! He's much happier in pockets which seem to keep him dryer.

Maddie, I have a bunch of extra pockets and some fitteds in various conditions (some great, some not so great but usable) that we are not using. Would you like them? I'd be happy to ship them to you. They are mediums and one-sizes. Just PM me.

You can place a piece of fleece between the prefold and the baby, that will wick moisture away. You can also cut the arms off of sweatshirts and use them as a pocket for the prefolds. It achieves the same effect. Those are two solutions that worked well for me. We use g-diapers now because I am lazy with the laundry.

Blessings,
Betsie

that's funny, of all the dipes I've tried plain old Chinese Pre-folds are the most absorbent, better than the fitteds, AIOs or pockets I've tried. Are you washing properly? Machine drying them too high/frequently? After my first two boys I had to replace my dipes for the third baby because they were starting to lose absorbency since I was only machine drying them.

FWIW: Hemp liners are the BEST for doublers/inserts. They are the most absorbant AND the most trim.

if the diapers aren't absorbing there's all sorts of recipes out there for "stripping" the diapers.. do be sure you're not using any fabric softener, including dryer sheets (it negatively effects absorbancy)

Also don't forget that each child is different.. some may wet more constantly than others and some are more sensitive to the sensation of wetness

The only thing that I have ever found to keep baby dry when using prefolds is Gerber plastic pants. I have tried several diaper covers over the years, and I have to change the baby hourly at least.

That said, I am now using pocket diapers and, for the most part, really liking them. In fact, the baby still seems dry and I end up with a wet spot on my lap because just the edges get damp. My two year old doesn't even notice being wet now.

I think that those Gerber prefolds are pretty useless. I don't even like them for burp clothes. I think they have poly batting in the middle which absorbs nothing. I use only DSQ prefolds that I find at various sites online. Right now my dd age 1 is in 4x8x4 Indian prefolds and we never have a problem with leaks whether it be during the day or at night. I am not the most vigilant changer either. All of our diaper covers are wool soakers crocheted by me (can't afford to purchase wool soakers).
