Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I'm starting to realize that a lot of my problems must stem from the fact that I need to get more organized. It's too hard to remember everything. I forget to tell my dd to practice piano, to practice multiplication facts, etc. I forget what it was I was supposed to try and do to handle certain situations. I do have a small daily planner, but I have a tendency to forget to look at it. Also, I could use a better layout for such a planner. Say, something with the child's name, behaviour that needs to be worked on, and a plan to try to accomplish that with. I'm not sure what else could be on it. Do any of you have something like that to help you out on a day-to-day basis? Did you make your own, and if so, what types of 'things' did you include in it? I would like something that is 'inviting' to get out, and not too big. I find that I'm too lazy to open my big binder, b/c I don't want other things to slide down, create a mess, or whatever. I need a place to begin. Any ideas?

One thing that has helped me is to understand that I'm a macro-level thinker...I live in the big picture. Others lean toward micro-level thinking...imagine lots of details. Organizing myself and my family means finding a way that doesn't kill me with details. Much of the home organizing stuff that I see must be written by micro-level thinkers because I simply squirm thinking about having to pay attention to so much detail! This is my long winded way of saying, if you love the details then don't bother reading below .

I focus on our family priorities and make my own simple charts to reflect them. They are in a Word. doc. and we update them monthly or as needed. Here is a link to our current checklists on my much neglected blog, as well as other posts with the label "organize."

Prayers for you as you find a good fit for your family.

Love,

I make my own documents, lists, etc. on Word too.

Our appointments and outside activities aren't too much yet, so I can get away with writing appointments, etc. on a month-at-a-glance calendar on the fridge.

My 7 and 6 year old have a list of 4 or 5 daily school things that they need to do by the end of the day. Usually it's done in the morning. The 4,6,7 have their list of chores in the am and pm....I've used Managers of their Chores to help with this.

I have my morning, afternoon, evening routines listed on the fridge. Not that they all get done all the time, but it saves me from thinking about what comes next.

I also have a clipboard that has a running list of things to do, errands to run, call to make. And, underneath is where I keep any random pieces of paper that I need at the time.

Like I said, I don't go very many places, so a portable system isn't needed....yet.

In the past, I've also used Michele's Catholic Women's Daily Planner.

OK....Syncletica, I just re-read your question, and I didn't really answer what you asked.

About the children's stuff.

I use a word document for this too. A framework of what we'll do on what days M-F (this stays the same in a given time period).
And, then any extra things I think of I write down on this paper. ie: manners, cooking, specific books to read, concepts to help them with, things they have requested, things to talk about. If I don't write them down, I just forget and it never happens. I update it once/week, usually.

It sits on my clipboard too.

Just wanted to add that a clipboard or something that hangs on the fridge or bulletin board is what I use. I have a binder, which I just love because it's so pretty, but it requires opening! If all I have to do is glance up at the bulletin board, or look down at my clipboard I actually will do the things on my "to do" list.
I made a "responsibilities" checklist for each child. On it I list their chores, their schoolwork, and any extra outings. I print it off weekly. I'm supposed to check it as they do things, but I don't.    Even so, it keeps us organized. If they want to play on the computer, I ask "Did you do everything on your list?" and it helps.
I think I will add virtues training on this list. Perhaps putting a section for the particular habit we are working on like "first time obedience" (will they ever learn that one?! )

This is me too! I've finally given up having to open anything. I have to have my clipboards/lists, etc. hanging somewhere where I KNOW they are where i just have to look up to see it.

This probably isn't exactly what you're looking for, but the Tanglewood Corebook includes a place where you can put "habit of the week".

I've used habit problem/solution worksheets in a binder before to help me to keep track of what the kids are working on (or myself!).

I just have to tell my daughter what I need to work on with any given child, or what habit we all should focus on and she will let NOTHING slide.

Actually, I do have checklists posted on the fridge during the school year. I know Laura Berquist has said she used posted lists during the summer too.

Thanks for posting the link to the Tanglewood Corebook Willa! It's just what I've been looking for!
It will work great on a clip board too!

I use lists and clipboards too. This has helped tremendously this year. I copied Elizabeth's chart and then tweaked to fit our routines/work. I also use Covey's planner for my personal to do list. This helped so much because then I wasn't carrying around in my head what I needed to do for the day. I can also keep track of when library books or rental videos are due as well as my routines.

So, if you use more than one clipboard, where do you put them all? Exactly what charts do you have on your clipboards, if you don't mind my asking.
A daily planner list, a child's to do list, perhaps, what else? Do you flip through many pages just to accomplish everything that has to be done?
(BTW, thank you, everyone, for your input. I really appreciate it. )

I just have one list on my clipboard. If I'm really organized I get all the children's worksheets out and put them on a clipboard the night before but that doesn't always happen. If you want to email me directly I can send you the chart that I made. holmesbunch at mac dot com I based it off of Elizabeth's which is on her blog.

I keep my to-do list separate from all of this in my planner. I usually have it sitting on my counter or desk. Sometimes I make it up the night before. I also usually do a month at a time for appointments. I like that I can transfer things from one month to the next because some days I do the exact same things.

I use mine like Monique, except my to do list is on their too. My clip board is my "command central". I tried getting each of the kids one last year, but that didn't work out like I had hoped. So now I'm back to just one for me and it works well. I even splurged and ordered this pretty one for next year. (You have to scroll down to see it.) They have several styles.
