Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

We pray almost daily that the Lord will add children to our family and as the months pass, it's becoming more and more apparent that these "additions" won't come through my own womb. More recently, we've been researching international adoption but have also had a strong sense that we might find ourselves surprised by an unexpected domestic situation. That situation may have come up. This is what I'd like to know from those of you who have done private domestic adoption:

We haven't had a homestudy done. Do we need one with private adoptions?

I'm assuming we would need a lawyer who is familiar with these matters.

What else should we know?

Thanks and if you think of it, pray for the Lord's will in this situation.

You probably will need a Dear Birth MOther letter and family portfolio to show what your family looks like.

Sure Martha!

I think all the specifics will depend on the agency you use, or if you even use one. We adopted through Catholic Charities (no longer doing adoptions here in MA )and didn't have to hire our own lawyer.

I should clarify. We have learned of a pregnant young girl who does not want her baby. There is no agency involved. Therefore, we won't need a "Dear Birth Mother" letter and I'm also wondering if we even need a Homestudy.

It may depend on your state. In Arizona, you would.

Martha,
I do believe that you still need a homestudy here in VA....our family was recently blessed by being able to help find a wonderful Catholic family who is in the process of adopting a little one from a young lady in our parish. The baby is not due until Aug and their homestudy ran out in July so they are having to do something to extend it. This is a private adoption also. Both the birth mom and the adoptive parents are here in VA.

In my state, I need an agency even if I find a birth mother. We also needed lawyers.

A homestudy gives you a license to adopt. I'm pretty sure that is standard.

If adoption is formalized in a court (ours were), I guess a lawyer would be necessary. Isn't that standard? In our case, the domestic, private adoption was considered foster to adopt until we made it to court. (It took 8 months for one adoption and 19 for another.)
