When I was little, my family used to reserve Sunday afternoons for family time -- we'd play games or watch old Shirley Temple movies on TV (yes, this was before videos and dvd's  ), have snacks and just be together. Of course, as we got into high school, they weren't as frequent  !
I'd like to start up a game-playing tradition with my own family. Mine range in age from 16 down to 3. Now, obviously the 3 yo cherubim will just watch, but what games would you suggest for this wide an age range. I would like to get a few for Christmas -- things like Scrabble, which can be as hard as who's playing, Yahtzee, etc are the ones we used to play.
Any suggestions?

Mary I bet your family would like Outburst. It's a game where your team gets to yell out all the answers  . No I'm not hinting at anything...but our family has always come back to it again and again. What I like is that the little kids can play because different age ranges can be on one team together. It's the game that my sisters and their kids love for us to bring to Thanksgiving.
We also have a great game called Catholic Categories that several people can play at once against the clock, then total up points. I believe it might be one of those games that CHC used to sell back when they started out as a game catalog.
You could easily make your own game sheets. If anyone is interested I'll round ours up and describe how it's set up.

Oh and since we took cards on vacation we're really into War, Speed and Spoons games.

My kids aren't as old as some of yours, Mary (oldest is 11) so I don't if I'll be much help, but they get a huge kick out of having us play Twister with them.  They also like Battleship, Life and Monopoly. I know there are more, but those spring to mind.
My 3-yr. old loves "Pretty, Pretty Princess" and it's rather amusing to see her daddy or me with the earrings, crown, etc.

Oh, we love Outburst. They have a Bible version also.
Other favorites:
Scattergories (regular or Bible version)
Taboo
Cranium (or the younger version Cadoo)
Apples to Apples (or Apples to Apples Jr.)
Catch Phrase
Pictionary
Most of these games are good for mixed ages since you can work in teams. Helps balance things out.
If you like Scrabble-type games then Upwords or Boggle are also good choices.
Oh, and Bunco is lots of fun although we've never tried to play it as a family - it's better with 12+ people.
Has anyone ever played the Blokus board game? I wanted to get it last Christmas because I had heard great reviews of it but it was literally sold out of every retail outlet which carried it. They hadn't been able to keep up with the demand. I was looking into it again for this year though. They say it is good for ages 5 and up - challenging enough for adults, easy enough for kids.

My family growing up had wide ranges in ages. We played Clue, Monopoloy, Yahtzee (favorite) and many card games for multiple people. Scattergories was fun with small ones, too. If the little ones were too young, we did partners, older with younger.
I have a card game called Krypto that was fabulous in playing math. It's not for sale anymore, but this link tells all about and alternative ways to play. But it is on eBay.
We also played the Dictionary Game...which just requires a big dictionary and paper and pens.

How about Tribulation and also Number Quest, a DK game. Tri-Ominoes is another one. My children love maths games.  I'd rather play word games or quiz games.

Oh, we also used Dominos to play games like "Chicken Foot." You can get sets of dominos that go up to 12 (maybe more?) with different colored dots for each number. The Chicken Foot game is good for all ages.
I'll also add our dining room table was a round 70 inch table...perfect for all our game nights!

Another thing we do during Sunday family time -- not a math game (unless you count the counting-before-seeking,) but our kids get a huge kick out of having us play hide and seek with them. We'll play quite a few rounds -- the hiding places get more and more clever as the kids get older and the 3 yo. loves to be Mommy's sidekick, whether hiding or seeking.

This isn't the game mentioned but is another Catholic game. It's called Divinity and is based on the catechism. There are three levels of difficulty for the questions so can be played easily with a mixed age group.

I was afraid you would ask! We were taught by a friend, so I don't think I could do it justice, but I searched online and found this page which gives a variety of instructions. I have Double 15 Color Dot Dominoes...I've seen them come in Double 18, or Double 12 would do fine for a small family. I always go larger, then you can hunt out the extra dominoes if less people or a shorter game is desired.
It's fun, and even the littles can play, because if they know their colors or count the dots or match they can play along.
A similar type game is Mexican Train.

One more card game we played is called Boure pronounced Boo-Ray. Here's two other Explanations or here. Now, we NEVER use money. Only small poker chips or pennies. Nothing is kept after the game, and the initial "money" is passed out before the game. We were fond of this game because our dad taught it to us and made it so much fun...and just saying the name was cool!
We also do a variant for Yahtzee. We have "chips" or pennies. If you don't use all three rolls in a turn, you get a chip for each turn you didn't use (say you got a large straight on the first roll, you'd get two chips). Then when you're in a bind on another roll you can cash in the chip for an extra roll (or how many chips you have).

Guess what!! I found a Catholic Scattergories game! No kidding. And Divinity is on the same page.
Here's how Catholic Categories works: Make a grid with 5 rows and 5 columns and keep a master. Leave room on the left of the rows and at the top of the columns to write the catgories. Make up cards with Catholic categories such as female, male saints, NT saints, shrines, etc. Draw 3-5 cards for the columns,depending on how many categories the players want. Now make up cards with 3-5 letter words such as ANGEL, SAINT, POPE, MARY, etc. Pick a card at random and put the letters along the left side (1 at each row). Now using a timer, race to see who can get the most answers in the categories using the letters. For instance if I have S at row 1 and a Saint in column 1 I could write Simon, Susan, etc. I can't remember the point system right now but it could be pretty simple; 1 or 2 points for each answer. Got it?

Just poking my head in here for the great hints . One game I used to play with my sisters (when I was younger) who were 7 and 11 years older than me is Pit. It is a game where you trade and collect different crop cards (wheat, barley, ect..) and each has a different card value. You should be able to find this at a game store. I'm sorry I don't have a link. This is a game that is easy to learn and once you understand the strategy even a young one can learn. It also explains trading and stock market values in an enjoyable way. I know they still make it because I saw it last Christmas for sale at the mall.
I love all these ideas.

Oh, Julie! I'm glad you poked your head in!!! I forgot about this game. Here's a link for a "Deluxe" version of Pit. We played this also...and had such a blast for all ages. It gets loud, but fun...especially ringing that bell!
