Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Has anyone done this around 8 or 9 months? This baby (no 4) is the first who has taken a pacifier. I read somewhere about taking it away around 8 or 9 months but now I can't find it. Any advice? Wait til later? Another time better?

In my limited experience, I don't know that there is any best time to break the pacifier habit once a little one is addicted, although it is usually recommended by age 1 with the bottle close after.

A two-stage cold turkey method seemed to work with my nephew. First, his pacifier wasn't allowed during awake periods for a week or so. Then the pacifier just "disappeared" one day altogether; it was "lost".

Good luck!!

I did cold turkey with my daughter too, for nighttime use. Daytime she gave up herself at about 9 mos.

I've heard of putting hot sauce or vinegar or something yucky on the nipple. That way it's supposedly less traumatic, becuase it is in a sense THEIR decision to stop. Dose that make sense?

All three of my babies loved their pacifiers, but when child #2 had to have one in his mouth and one in each hand and I had to become accountable for making sure he had three...I can tell you it became a bit too much! (and yes he would swap them out and let us know the fresh one tasted good) I started nipping the very end of the nipple with a pair of sharp sewing scissors...this caused them to deflate when sucked and he would say, "Noonie Broke" and proceed to throw them in the garbage. Yes, he was older...2 1/2 years old.

I've read that just pitching them in the garbage at 8 or 9 month is best...yes, there will be a few nights of misery, but they'll be gone. Good luck to you!!

For my few who liked a pacifier I just threw them out around 9 months and nursed more often for a few days until they made the adjustment. A little longer to get them down at night for about a week, and then things were fine.

I always wanted them off the pacifier before the arrival of a new baby (all dc about 2 years apart) so around 18 months, we pull out the trash can in the kitchen and we all stand around the trash and throw them in one at a time. By then the 18mth old knows the trash is a dirty place.. Sounds silly, but it worked with all 5 kids so far!
Good luck!
