In a nutshell, I just can't do it.
Ds is 3 1/2 months, over 16 pounds, and I'm little. He's heavy to hold, still needs to gain some head control and still very sporadic and floppy at times.
He's not liking the Ergo. I was so frustrated, as was he today. He wants to see what's going on and he acts like he's restricted, wanted to move his arms and legs around. He did love the Bjorn, but I can't wear that for fear of clogged ducts.
I swaddle him at night and he loves it. But daytime, I'm not doing too well.
Is there anything at this stage that is easy to use, like a Bjorn but not? I had the same problem with my older son -- and I just thought it was because I wasn't trying or started soon enough.
Oh Bother. I need another choice besides holding him in my arms!
ETA: It seems he wants an older baby hold, but he can't handle it yet.

Are you committed to wearing him full-time? My middle child was very big and ended up having to use a bouncy seat alot. I made sure it was up on the table and not on the floor so we could have eye contact while I was working in the kitchen, etc.

No, not full time. I'm not comfortable putting his bouncy seat (which really doesn't bounce) up high, but I keep him nearby where he can see me. I also give him tummy and floor time. He gets grumpy in my arms and is happy when I put him down so he can kick and move around.

I have a friend who's current passion is baby carriers and all the ways to use them.
Have you tried facing him outward or sideways in the ergo? She says the directions say not to.. but you just "froggy" their legs and it works fine.. sounds like the kangaroo carry for a sling.. the baby sits sorta crosslegged either facing out or sideways and they can see what's going on.
There is one called a Pikkolo that's designed for a baby to face in or out or on the back. http://catbirdbaby.com/shop/
Another option might be a Mei Tai.. it's similar to the ergo but a softer form (tie straps instead of buckles).. and you can use a shoe lace or simliar to adjust the size of the legs so that baby can sit in it "backwards" (meaning facing out).
A great place to ask for more help and to find info is http://www.thebabywearer.com

My baby son is 5 months and 16 lbs 4 oz. I still use the Moby Wrap for him. He can face out when he's wanting to see the world, or in when he's sleepy. So much more comfortable than the Bjorn, for both of us. And since it smells like "us" I put it on him as a blanket at naptime to help him sleep without me lying next to him.

I think Jenn has a Moby and doesn't like it, right?
I also still recommend a mei tai.
I wonder if wearing him more at home and such would get him used to not turning to look out.
Facing out is possible, but not very comfy for you since he's big and it shifts the center of gravity from you to hanging off of you.
Not sure where you are in VA, but there is a super active babywearing group in the DC/Baltimore area. They have meetings monthly in a variety of locations all over the area. There are also quite a few vendors in VA that might be able to help--some teach classes. Though it is a mixed group overall, the two ladies that run the group are faithful Catholics--I could definitely put you in touch with one of them I know personally if you wanted. Or if you visit thebabywearer.com as suggested above, she is the moderator there named Gretchen.
Have you tried back carries? I assume he has pretty good neck control if you are using the Ergo without the insert. Sometimes they feel they can see better by face the same way even though they can't really see over you--or maybe its that there isn't anything like your arms in their immediate peripheral that makes them think there is something better to look at? A longer bodied mei tai should offer the extra head support needed for one at this age.

Just a minute, but thanks for the advice. I'll go to babywearer, and I do have a local mom who sells baby things that I can trial some carriers.
I have been trying at home. I want to make sure we'll do okay before I try out.

I remember this post from Lisbet's blog.
back carry
I have never done such a thing, but I saved it in my bookmarks for future reference because it looked so cool. I always have used the standard metal frame backpack once they hit about 6 months and would love to have something work for younger. Maybe I'll be trying this out when our little bundle comes in July!
I hope Lisa doesn't mind me linking??!!!

Jenn, another good alternative to holding him, or a bouncy seat, is a reclining high chair. I bought a great one years ago. It has wheels (that lock) so I just roll the baby up next to me in the kitchen or doing the laundry, etc., and we can "chat" while I get done the work that is difficult with him in a carrier.
I like it because he is higher up and safe from any helpful siblings. I can't stand putting a bouncy or car seat up on a high surface. It is just another worry.
Do you have the MobyD yet? The baby can face out, see the world and have head support.

Jenn, MB is about 22 lbs. at 7 months old, I can hardly do any front carry with him at all. (I'm just not built for it!) Back carries are really awesome for a big baby that wants to look about while held. A woven wrap rather than a stretchy wrap might work well for you. Just a thought!

I saw the subject of this post and thought "oh that is SOO me and my babies" and LOL when I saw my sister was the post-er!
I have about 9 lb babies, and they get big so fast that my 5'2" frame cannot even fathom carrying them in a carrier, or for a long period of time! My babies usually ended up in the swing or bouncy seat on the floor, since I wasn't comforable with them on the counter or up high either.

when Judy was a baby, she was bigger. I used a non padded sling. and carried her snuggled against me, facing forward. she had decent head control though...
but I could put her in front off to the side slightly and that helped.
when she was around 5.5 months I would back carry her.
good luck finding a way...
