Thirteen hours? Really? What is going on? Our whole family is in a lottery at our parish but I don't think either child could survive that. I might take a very small baby, though. One who just nurses and sleeps in a sling all day, anyway. But that's a lot of diapers to pack!

I would because otherwise I wouldn't go. I don't think I could leave an infant for 13 hours.

Kathy -- I've done Papal audiences out in the blazing Roman sun for HOURS with 3 month old (and her 15 month old brother in a backpack); than again when we actually had a private audience -- they were a couple of years old but by then JP was 3-4 months old....
I wouldn't hesitate to bring him ... have a Mayan wrap or snugli you can put him in; have you and dh (as well as the older kiddoes) help and I'd DO IT!

I have a 7 month old, and I'd do it in a heartbeat! Definetly use a good sling - are you comfortable with wraps, that would be your most versitile choice. I'd go for it!

Personally I always thought that was the easiest time to do something like that with a baby. I always figured as long as the nursing baby and I were together the time and location didn't matter. Then I never had one who needed routine and familiar environment. You are your baby's natural habitat.
I definitely would do it - it's a possible once in a lifetime opportunity. When JPII first came to the US in 1979 I was 15. My parents took all of us from 2-15 downtown DC for the festivities, parade, Mass. It was a long day and crowded. Friends wondered why my mother was crazy enough to do that with little ones with the traffic and crowds. But she knew this was history and was important to us and might never have the opportunity again.

If you're well-prepared, why not? This is a once-in-a-lifetime chance. You can always sit on the stadium steps, in the shade, if you and Baby need a break. (I took my ds to Orioles games at age 3 months...nursed him on steps...it was fine.)

Wow, you are all much braver than me. But I'm not comfortable nursing at just any place. I need my "station" all set up. I can do it in the car, and at someone else's house, but as far as public places, I'm a total wimp.
I have a 4 month old and I opted to not bring my children. It just would be too long with my very active 4 yo and calm, but needy infant. Dh did win the lottery and will be going.
We are thinking about the motorcade on another day together, or just bringing the 4yo with Daddy, but haven't decided.

Go for it it, I would not hesitate, what a great opportunity. I agree with the others you may not have another chance.

We would have gone with all 5 - even the nursing baby. But we would only be able to get 2 tickets - so have decided not to go - also the nursing baby counts as one ticket. I was disappointed but am taking it that maybe it is for the best and would be too much for us (for me anyway )
I think a nursing baby is easier than an 18m toddler.

I had an opportunity to go when JPII came to Giant's Stadium in 95...but my son was a newborn and I had 21 month old twins...so I didn't go and reallly wanted to...but my best friend did with her young son. She kept him very happy under her rain poncho and even got her pic in Time magazine with the little guy peeking out from under that poncho...LOL I guess it depends if you might get too tired with the day?

I've just recently aquired a moby wrap and I have found that I can breastfeed with total discretion, it is just so functional, as I would normally have the same concerns as Jenn, since it is still only early Spring over there, bubs would keep snuggly and warm too...we hope to get down for WYD and will be thinking of all those things soon too...

I was thinking about this thread. You women are to be applauded. It all has to do with knowing my own strength. The nursing problem for me is that I'm very large (and so is my son) and I just need more props than just holding him in position.
I have an over 16 pound 3 month old, and a very active 4 year old, both a joy, but the problem in the equation is me. I get easily tired and very tense in public crowded settings. In fact, most social arenas aren't good for me. It's hard for me personally, but even harder when you have to really step it up with the little ones in that situation.
So, if you see no problem, I'd go for it. There was a family on our trip to Rome for the canonization of St. Josemaria who brought an infant. He got blessed by JPII and in photos, also.
I SOOO want to be a person who could do it, but...

I was just going to write a similar thing. Jenn - the last 6 months have taught me about recognizing my limitations and being happy with who I am. I realize that I can never be "supermom" and I cannot do things that many others can - I spent a lot of time feeling guilty and wishing I felt stronger and healthier - but now I am more content and less apologetic. We did not make our September vacation after MJ was born, nor our December one - as I just did not feel up to it. I am concentrating on being peaceful and kind and gently with my family and having an organized, peaceful home - and if the only way I can do it now is by staying home and not having outside activities than so be it.
BTW - on the papal mass - my willingness was there - not sure we would have made it.

Jenn,
I was reading this and totally thinking the same things as you have said. Thanks for letting me know I'm not the only one who wouldn't go! My baby (who will be 4 mos) would be miserable, and so would I, Pope or no Pope. (Though, like you, I wish I was the kind of person who would.)

There is tremendous grace in taking part in such a blessed event, but there is also benefit in watching the televised version from the comfort of your home where you would be able to witness much more than you could from a limited vantage point in person. I've experienced different papal events both in person and by viewing them on TV and find that each have their merits. Praying for wisdom as you discern what is best for your family at this time! We are incredibly blessed to live in such a time as this...we have the incredible gift of witnessing such wondrous historical events in so many ways, thanks to media and widespread travel opportunities!

Our little parish received 10 tickets for the mass. I am the only member of my family that was picked from all the entries. I will be going without any family, but with a small group from my church. If I had DH with me I wouldn't be concerned at all. One of my fears is that I will show up with my ticket & my baby, and I will be turned away because he doesn't have a ticket.
I've decided to go anyway. If I'm turned away, my dad offered to come & pick me up.
Will there be no children at this mass? A minor can't go w/o an adult, but if every parish did the drawing like mine did, there will be no children there. Very sad. I hope I am wrong about this.
