What do you think about laundry on Sunday? We try to observe Sunday as a day of rest and spiritual renewal. But I can't help myself sometimes, I end up doing a couple of loads. In a large family the laundry piles high so quickly. Skipping a day or 2 can make it a daunting task. I consider it necessary work but I still feel guilty about doing it.

Dear Bridget,
I was JUST telling Mike that I think I should have spent four hours yesterday cleaning while he took the kids to soccer. The laundry is now backed up and the house needs major tidying. I felt good yesterday about a crockpot dinner and an early bedtime, but this morning came crushing in and I can't help but feel like I should have done more work yesterday afternoon. It seems like no amount of Saturday organizing gets me through to Monday, though, admittedly, Saturday was really busy and I was really tired after being up all Friday night. Mike is rarely home on Saturdays, so whatever I do, I do as the sole adult. Do you ever wish you could have just four hours or so alone or with a big kid to get things really ordered and clean? For me, I think this might be as restorative as a nap!

I do laundry on Sundays but dh does cooking and dishes so I don't have to -- for him, that's relaxing  !
I firmly believe that laundry is a necessary -- if I let it pile up, it would make me so cranky Monday morning -- I don't think that's a good idea  !
But, that's all we do -- we don't do any school planning or other work -- even my 16 yos is not supposed to do homework, unless he simply had no other time (with soccer, service projects, etc sometimes his Fri/Sat are gone).

Mark cooks every single weekend. 
He loves to do it. I lovefor him to do it. 
Yesterday he took us all out to eat at Chili's because they have out outtage the next two weeks. He'll be sleeping during the day and working 12 hour nights. He'll also be working the next two weekends...which I'm definitely NOT use to. 
Laundry...I do approximately every other day. Towels are endless! On Mondays I have to do whites because every Tuesday Annie needs her white leotard for arco and Chelsea needs her white uniform shirt for piano lessons and CCD.
Darks are washed on Tuesdays because we need soccer clothes for Wednesdays and weekends. My older two each have a wicker basket in their bedrooms. They do their own clothing. Mark was telling me I should get the 12 yr old to do his as well, then I'd only have us and the 2 little girls to wash for.

Sundays at our house are not the way I would have them be...but I try not to stress about this as much as I used to or I tend to get disgruntled and dissatisfied.
As of now we do not cook on Sundays...we have sandwitches.
I should not clean on Sunday, but I always seem to. I do laundry and vacuuming (we have a German Shepherd and a Cat). I think that if I didn't do this my already hectic Mondays would become utter chaos. And what happens in chaos...mom yells.
So.....
Do I try to observe the sabbath only to be a grouchy mom on Monday?
Or do I do some work on Sunday to have Mondays go a little smoother?
Or is it only a question of mom being a little more organized and creative in order for things go run better without any excuses for not observing the Sabbath?
Then,somewhat related....in comes my selfish defensive side that says: "Hey, I know that I should not work on Sundays, but is it Okay to just sit and watch sports all day on television?" Not going there....been there, done that, the end result of that argument with dh is never good....
I think I will leave it alone, or only worry about my part...very hard to do with my type of personality.

I don't do housework on Sundays. But I count Sunday by sunset to sunset, because our mass up here is 4 pm Vigil mass on Saturday. So if the house is wrecked, and it usually is, I will start trying to restore it a bit Sunday after dinner. And yesterday evening I handwashed my son's football jersey, but the wash can usually wait till Monday. I have 2 teenagers though and I think that does help -- I don't get as overwhelmed with a mess on Monday because I know it will only take a couple of hours or so to get clean!

A very holy priest that I know said that 2 hours of servile work on Sunday can be done if it is necessary but to try and do as much as possible to prevent it from becoming a habit. I try and remember this and try to spend no more than that amount of time on Sunday with cleaning/laundry, etc...
Father Bob Levis (from EWTN's Web of Faith), spoke to the question about homework on Sunday's here recently .

I try to do the absolute minimal amount of organizing/putting away/picking up on Sundays and avoid laundry like the plague until sunset. After dinner, I usually start a load or two to get a jump on the week, but nothing heavy-duty. And I never pay bills on Sundays---what my old Auntie used to call the Ultimate Hard Work!!

Elizabeth -- I have the benefit of just planning for my 5 and 6 yo dc. My 14 yod is using Seton so she's all planned for, I review with her every week to ensure she's staying on task, answer questions, reviw and just generally touch base.
For my younger two, I plan on Friday afternoon -- after reviewing how the week went and what we got done/didn't get done  . I get all my books, supplies etc all lined up on Friday and make a run on Saturday if necessary.
When the next week starts, I review each day before making dinner -- did we get as far as I wanted, what sparked the kids' interests, what should we drop/develop/continue the next day..... This way we can follow rabbit trails more easily....
I try to stay flexible -- if the kids get up a bit "pitiful", then we declare a reading-only day, or a pajama day, or a science/nature day --
Over a month, we get done just about all we need to stay basically on track, but I don't worry overly much as I'm trying to instill in them the love of learning, discovering and enjoying being together....
Does this make sense?

Generally I don't do laundry on a Sunday. However it does mean that I then have 3/4 loads to do on the Monday. I guess I am trying to point out to the children that Sunday's are different because so much happens here on a Sunday that shouldn't. We have been building our home for the past 4 years and so Sundays we do work - on the house. .
As the house winds up I'm slowly trying to get them to understand the concept of 'no unnessary work on the Sundays'. Actually we've just started taking Sundays off the house to go on pinics/ bush walks as a family, to enjoy God's day.

This is a wonderful idea! I normally don't want to think about planning school on Friday so I end up doing it Sunday afternoon while the baby sleeps. I like your idea of doing it Friday instead just because then the things we didn't get to would be fresher in my mind and hopefully can become a priority for the next week
