My kids ignore me when I ask them for help or to pick up after themselves. Nothing I have tried has worked. What do you do?

I have my kids repeat me when I ask them to do something, especially if they seem distracted. So that way I know they heard me, then if they don't do it they get extra chores or something taken away. That usually works at my house.

I yell too --
but on good days, I make sure the child has eye-to-eye contact with me and is giving me his/her full attention when I speak. Asking them to repeat esp. when giving detailed instruction is helpful too.

I yell too
but on good days I do the same. I make sure they have eye to eye contact, have them repeat what I say, and sometimes I write the chore on our white board so they **don't** forget. One thing I do to make sure they are paying attention is I tell them to "find my face", then they look directly at me for instructions. (ETA this is mostly for my younger set) After instructions are given they MUST say "Yes, Mom". That means it's a binding contract that they are held liable for. My reluctant "Yes, Mommers" can repeat "Yes, Mom" 25 times for me if they give me grief.

If they ignore me, I get their attention and then I say, "OK- let's try that again. Mom says pick up your shoes. And you say...."
They know they correct answer is "Yes, Mom" or "Yes, Ma'am".
If they won't help pick up their toys, I quietly announce I am filling a basket for the poor children who can take care of the toys. Anything I pick up goes in the basket. That works like a charm.

I ask "Are you JUST IGNORING me?!" For some reason, that question, even when I don't yell, makes my kids shape up.
