Can anyone recommend a special gift for a teenage boy's 18th birthday that would signify a transition to manhood?
I have ideas for graduation gifts, such as a religious medal and items needed for college, but I am trying to figure out something for his birthday in a few weeks.
This is my oldest child, so I'd love to hear what others have done! Thanks in advance!

Does he already have his own bible? The Ignatius RSV comes with leather cover for a reasonable price. We like to add the tabs for identifying the books of the bible. For one significant occasion our oldest son received his grandmothers's antique copy of "The Imitation of Christ", (which she received as a youth from a family in Mexico) and he really treasures it. Another idea might be a copy of "Theology of the Body", which focuses on the true meaning of manhood and is such an incredible gift to this generation. With two adult children we have found they really appreciate beginning their own collection of books centered on the Faith. If money were no object I would love to give each of our children a set of the Navarre Bible commentaries before they strike out on their own, but have to be content with whetting their appetite for Scripture with their very own copy of the RSV. Hope you come up with a meaningful gift for your own ds.

Gosh, we gave Michael a baby sister . Actually, on his birthday, we gave him a very good camera. It just worked out that the camera has given back to us a hundredfold. His sister was born 5 days after his 18th birthday and he has made her the most photographed baby ever.

Yes, he has a Bible with the tabs. That would be a nice gift, though.
My husband and I read the book Raising a Modern-Day Knight which talked about providing celebrations for special times in a boy's life.
Confirmation is Christian adulthood in the Church; and now we are hitting the 18th birthday, and we want to instill a sense of "worldly adulthood" with a meaningful gift and celebration. When he turned 13, we gave him some tools and a razor. Can't afford a vehicle for his 18th birthday ... nor do we care to.
A gift of a sibling isn't happening here in 2 weeks, Elizabeth ; but it *WOULD* truly be a gift!
I'm hoping somebody more creative than I could inspire me! Thank you!!

No great inspirational idea here... we got our oldest a cell phone when he turned 18. We knew he would need it for college. Aside from that, we took him to a nice restaurant for dinner (nicer than the usual "birthday dinner out" fare our youngers get.)
God Bless,

In December my son turns 18, I plan on giving him a very nice brass compass, (he hikes) and writing something along the lines of hoping that what we have raised him to be will always be his guide, and that he will always find his true North in Christ, the Church, and in our love and teaching blah, blah, blah...I won't bore you with the long blubbering mommy letter I have planned but you get the gist.
You know now I am thinking... my daughter will be starting her hope chest on her 13th birthday, I should have done this for my son too!! He could have used some tools, household items, thermos, nice watch, car maintenance book, oh my goodness I guess it isn't too late to make him a chest too. But what do I call it? A treasure chest? A "hope I have wife that can cook" chest? Have to think about that.
