My little guy has colic. This is the real deal, not just a little gas or fussiness, etc. I am talking hours of crying everyday.
Here is what I am doing/ trying so far:
Homeopathic colic remedy
Mylicon drops
Infant massage
Hot water bottle on his tummy
Ginger tea for me
Elimination diet for me (no chocolate, dairy, gassy foods)
Wearing in sling
Warm Baths
We are all exhausted and nothing works for long, if at all.
Any other suggestions? I am ready to go out and buy a swing to try that. I am open to anything.

My first had it, it was HORRIBLE! We finally did a swing anda pacifier. She was the only one who ever took a pacifier and sat in a swing.
You most defiantly have my prayers.

I'm so sorry, Molly. Maria is just getting better in the evenings. The Moby has really helped A LOT !!! I actually have to go to bed with her at 6 EVERY night, or she'll scream until we go to bed. She didn't like the massages, or baths.
We have dinner at 5, clean up and I'm gone for the night. She really likes being in bed. I will say a prayer for. We've never had a colicky baby. It's tough.

He is asleep in my Moby right now. What really gets me is that he will fuss both during the day for a couple of hours and then for several hours at night. And he won't stay asleep for very long in the co-sleeper or reclining highchair, so I end up holding him all day or he starts screaming again.
He is already taking a pacifier which only my first took to. I think the swing would be worth the investment at this point.

I've just given up and go to bed with her after dinner. I can keep her calm in the Moby as long as I walk around in circles, but I get tired easily, so I lay down and nurse her on and off until we tun the lights out around 9. I have a swing my neighbor gave me, but that only keeps her calm for a few minutes. If you want you can borrow it. Just let me know.

I drank fennel tea religiously -- every four hours, like medicine. Completely cut out caffeine. I also went to the cranial osteopath. It seemed to work (but might have been a coincidence!).

Molly,
Along with what Elizabeth just said, I really encourage a visit to a good chiropracter! Our John Paul was diagnosed with infant reflux (with absolutely no spitting up) and was a very unhappy baby. He cried a lot! (Would NOT take a pacifier and would NOT sit in the swing. We held him a lot!) I thought that by baby #6 I sort of knew what I was doing...
Anyway, he had a couple vertebrae out of place and his spine was twisted one way on the top part and the opposite way on the lower part. He was in pain . I wish I'd taken him in sooner. After the chiro appt, he has been a happy baby. He still doesn't sleep the best, but I'm working on my diet to see what bothers him.
Just thought I would share my experience. Hope it helps and you definitely have my prayers!
God bless you and your sweet little guy,
Angela

My ds 3 has colic too! We struggled for about a month until I found the BEST book! It is called The Happiest Baby on the Block. It is packed full of great advice but the main thing they recommend is using the 5 s's
S - swaddle
S - Sway
S - Suck (nurse, bottle or pacifier)
S - Side (hold baby so he is on his side)
S - Shhhh (you actually making shushing noises, which replicate womb sounds.
Do all 5 of these together, First Swaddle the baby real tight, have them suck, while you sway and making shushing noises. I used to Shush tunes of songs just for my own entertainmnet. It really worked for us! He would calm down and eventually go to sleep.
Good Luck! Hope this works for you!

I'm so sorry to hear this, Molly. I remember going through this with my oldest son. It sounds like he's in pain with Reflux. Oldest ds would wake up every time I put him down in bed. Can you try elevating the head of the cosleeper? There are wedges you can buy to put under the mattress.
We were at our wit's end with the lack of sleep. I think G slept 4-6 hours in a 24 hour period when it was the worst. He's finally fall asleep in exhaustion around 4:00 am. What worked for him is Zantac, so that his esophagus wasn't raw when he was having reflux. I know you are looking for non-medicinal, but just in case you are desperate.
Now I think I remember you having to remove the dairy for your last child? Remember to also watch for casein and whey, as they are the proteins that get passed through your milk and many times bother the baby.
Soy protein is another area infants have intolerance, so that might be another food to try. It's so hard, especially when you are sleep deprived and just surviving hand-to-mouth. Food is a comfort at this time, also you don't want to spend too much time thinking about it, since thinking is rather muddled.
You're in my prayers, Molly!

Oh, and we splurged for this one and bought an Amby. N seems to sleep better than in the flatter surface bed.

Seth doesn't spit up at all, so I hadn't considered reflux.
He seems to sleep better in the highchair, but even then it is rarely for very long. At night he sleeps on his side with my arm around him and his head supported by my upper arm.
The whole chiropractor for a baby thing is so foreign to me. But to think he could be in pain because of a misalignment is just awful! Are there chirpractors who would have specific training for a baby?
Jenn, I was actually re-reading a thread from when my Emily was a baby and I had given up dairy and you were helping me figure out what else to eliminate and what I could eat so I didn't starve. Well, here I am again.
Gotta run, screaming baby. I will check back later.

Molly, if you are in N. Va I could recommend a chiropractor. She specializes in pregnant women and children. She's great. Just let me know.
Anyways, I'm reading this thread with interest.
I've got a colicky baby too. Doesn't sleep much, writhes and fusses and spits up alot. I'm TRYING to cut out dairy -- it's so hard. I spend the day in a sleep-deprived haze, trying to soothe the baby and tend to the toddler . . . It's awful. I will say prayers for everyone else in the same shoes.
My friend just told me that in Nourishing Traditions Sally Fallon has a recipe for babies with intesinal distress.
Boil water.
Pour over 2c. anise leaves and 2c. mint leaves (or just equal parts)
Steep till lukewarm
Drink it.
I haven't tried it yet and don't even know what anise leaves are or where to get them . . .

I will pray for you Mary Theresa! My next youngest is a month younger than your toddler. I can't imagine if I didn't have older kids to help out with her. Just keep reminding yourself that this part will fly by, really, and it will get easier.
The dairy thing is so hard! One thing that got me through last time was Haagen-Daz sorbet. It was a nice treat when it seemed like everything was off-limits and I was worn down and discouraged.
I will pm you to get the name of the chiropractor. My mom is in NoVa. We are further out these days but if she could watch the kids I could make it up there.
God bless.

It could be what they call "silent reflux" where the baby doesn't spit up.
You might want to look the more serious allergens like peanuts and shellfish. I'd try to get rid of obvious foods like that.
Not all colic is "food allergies" but that was my son's problem.

So, the peanut brittle that I had replaced chocolate with is out too. Okay.

I feel for you friend. Petey had silent reflux and it was AWFUL! Rob still sees him as being fussy and loud all because of those first few weeks/months (and you've seen how quiet that child really is--he's 19 mos now..)
When he was about 2 mos. old, I came across the Miracle Blanket. It helps to put babies in a real tight swaddle. It seemed to help Pete and you are welcome to try it if you like.

Gosh, I was so desperate I never eliminated chocolate until I was sure it was the culprit. I found dairy free chocolate to indulge. So maybe switch?

BTW, am I the only one who cannot handle when the baby cries? My nerves come unglued. I'm high stress anyway, but when he cries...yikes.

I get unnerved pretty quickly, too. Especially when I am tired or when the kids are all needing me at the same time.
I remember eating that good dark chocolate when Emily was a baby.
Amy, I have the Miracle Blanket. Some days it works great, some not so much. Just like everything else.
