As is probably normal, my little cute and adorable 15 month old has found and entered into the 'naughty' and aggresive stage where everything that is a no-no, a no-thank you, or an oh-oh, is funny. Especially hitting people in the face, throwing everything from anywhere to the floor or wall, or in the face, you name it.
Any suggestions for guiding my son in his curiosity so he can learn to explore without being violent and destructive?

Firm no's, lots of distraction, taking away items that are or may be thrown, and short time-outs.
That's the best I can offer.

Simplemama,
Lots of modeling of the behavior you want from him. If he hits, say something like, "Nice touches, please! Like this!" Then guide his little hand to show him how you want him to touch people. This takes A LONG time to sink in. :)

I am reading a great book right now called "Connection Parenting" and it is really teaching me a lot about why kids act the way they do. I have found that my own kids respond tremendously to first modeling the behavior that I want to see in them and then to a hug and kiss and a cuddle if the attention span allows. I have also found that if I take the time to meet their needs, they tend to have less needs! HTH!
Blessings,
Betsie

I have read different books about parenting, mostly from a gentle-discipline standpoint. I also just read a great article in the newest issue of Mothering, that talks about addressing the child's needs before seeking out a punishment so to say. The challenge is that usually when little bubby is hitting, I can't just stop what I'm doing and rock him or give him undivided attention. I have been doing the nice-nice gesture and so it is good to hear others suggesting the same thing. Thank you all for your encouragement!

Then my next suggestion would be to make sure to give him preemptive attention before you know your attention will be diverted and then try to engage him in something that will keep him happy. Trust me, with 5 kids, I know that it not even nearly always possible, but the more you can do this kind of thing, the better it will be. I am not very good at advance planning of attention, but I try to when I can.
It is really funny that I am offering this advice via the internet and yelling at my kids to leave me alone to that I can type! I think there may be a full scale battle in the family room by now!
Blessings,
Betsie

Betsie, who are the authors? I just check our library and they don't have this book, so I need to look around for it.

It is a really insightful book and I am enjoying it.
