My 9 mo old sleeps with me. We haven't always been co-sleepers, really just respond to what each child needs/wants as far as sleeping. Well she came out and refused to sleep anywhere but with me or on the couch for naps where all the daily action is. So we are co-sleeping and everything has been fine up until now. Really at night everything still is fine, but naps are what are a problem. Basically she doesn't nap very much. I used to be able to lay her on the couch and she would sleep for a few minutes. Now if I even lay her down she wakes right back up and tries to roll off the couch. I have tried laying her on the bed but that scares me because she is becoming so mobile. The crib is out of the question, she will not sleep in there! She will sleep , of course, if I am holding her or nursing her, but I can't always do that. Occasionally I can if we aren't too busy, but sometimes I need to get up and get some things done. So what do I do? Where do I put her? I tried laying her on my bed but she wouldn't stay there for more than a couple of minutes. She isn't much of a sleeper, but she needs to nap sometimes and I just can't figure out where she can safely do that and how to get her to stay there. She is an extremely snuggly cuddly baby and always has been. Any one have any ideas?

Can you put her in a back carrier? I have an Ergo that I use still with my 14mo for hours a day when she needs snuggling and I need to get things done. I don't get tired at all. I know they are expensive, but it's really the best money I ever spent on a baby. Mine is still in great shape after hours of daily use on two babies. The Ergo has a hood that can be snapped in place easily when the baby falls asleep so you don't have to worry about a flopping head.

We co-sleep, and something that we did was to lower our bed to the floor and make sure there was nothing on the floor around the bed for the baby to bonk on. (I actually read that most injuries of children rolling off the bed are due to debris, not the fall itself.)
Now my older daughter would not sleep without me, period. The second I got out of bed or an inch away from her she would wake up. I could sometimes sneak to the bathroom after she had been asleep for two hours at night. That was just her temperament. Thankfully, she started to outgrow it by around age 3 (and I we eliminated her nap at age two). I would often try to schedule errands during her bad time; sometimes a little doze in the car would hold her.
My younger daughter thankfully stays asleep after I leave. Until she learned to work her way off the bed herself, she would just sit and bed and cry for me to come get her. I think I've also felt more confident leaving her alone in the bed because we have a huge family bed consisting of a twin bed next to a queen. That's a lot of roll room from the middle. But I've also used her nap as a wonderful chance to take a short nap of my own.

on a blankie on the floor in an out of the way spot is good.
and leave something that smells like you with her.. I've also noticed that something that helps reflect some heat back helps.. my robe is usually perfect.. roll it up along side her.. so she still feels something all along her side. and that smells like you.. if it's warm it's even better (so like if you laid down for a few minutes on top of it and warmed it up and then snuggled it up to her when you get up.

Oh my goodness! Thanks for all the wonderful ideas! I never thought of a blanket on the floor. I will definately try that and Jodie, thanks for the idea of leaving something of mine next to her. She has a blankie but I think it smells more like her than me. I have tried her on my back in my Moby but she is so heavy. She is 24lb and so it really hurts my back having her there for a long time. I will try again though to see if that helps. Our bed is actually pretty tall (we need the storage space under it) so it was really scaring me to leave her up there alone during the day. Our house isn't very big so I can hear her if she wakes up. I would love to lay down with her for her naps but I'm not sure how that would go with the other kids. My other babies were still taking 2 naps a day at this age and we are lucky to get one good one (if I hold her) or a few really short ones that don't seem to do much good.

Great ideas from everyone.
Went through this with ds. Ds lived in the sling, til about a year and he was 20 lbs at 6 months!!Back carrier probably more comfy though. Mattress on the floor with a monitor in room(if you can get away). Nap rides--if she sleeps in the car seat, drive around and listen to books on tape, music, etc. I know, gas is ridiculous, park when she is asleep and read or let the other kids run at a playground where you can see them, do your drive through errands(bank, dry cleaners, library, etc.)Nap when she naps and pay the 11 year old to "babysit" the littles--I used to give my son 50 cents to entertain dd while I worked out for 30 minutes. That is all I can think of right now. Good Luck!!

Great ideas for you, Jess! My 10 month old naps on a large quilt on the floor in our bedroom since he is not safe in our bed without me next to him (I wish I could nap with him but alas, it's not possible). I hope all these ideas help you...babies with no nap time do not make for a happy home!
