Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I have no idea what I'm supposed to eat any more. My poor baby has so much gas. You can hear so much air in her little tummy. Every night she cries frantically for about half an hour. I nurse her over and over until she turns her head away. She burps well, she wets her diapers all day long, but she only goes potty every 2 days.

I have given her gripe water, which seems to have helped, but I don't feel comfortable giving it to her all the time.

Is there a special diet for babies with gas? I'm avoiding beans and broccoli, but I don't know if dairy might be causing it.

Help, please!!!

Ruth, dairy is the most common culprit. I've had several babies and I've counselled several moms with babies who were like different babies once the dairy was taken completely out of the moms' diets. You'll see some difference after leaving all dairy out only a day or so but it can take some time before the dairy is completely out of your system. Some moms find that it takes a week or more before they see a great deal of difference but then they are so happy they did!

Hope this helps... you can read more online at www.lalecheleague.org or www.kellymom.com (I'm not sure if that last one is correct).

Congrats!!!!!

Love,
JoAnna

I know how concerning this is, Ruth. Here is a brief article that discusses both maternal food intake options (elimination of the most common food culprits) as well as the possibility of baby receiving an abundant amount of foremilk (measured by the amount of wet diapers) and not enough hindmilk (as measured by bowel movements.)

You are doing a great job, as mommy and as mommy detective, Ruth . I'm praying for you!

Love,

Ruth, it may take some time to figure out what is causing her gassy tummy. With my 4th, it turned out to be peanut butter and chocolate. Use the gripe water or even mylecon drops while you are trying to figure this out. You are a good mommy to be so sensitive to your babe's needs

and because breastmilk is so very easily digested.. it can be perfectly normal for a fully breastfed baby to only have messy diapers up to every 10 days!! This is of course barring other problems.. so while it can be a symptom.. by itself it is not a problem.. so if changing what you eat helps.. you don't need to correct this part.

Ruth,
With Em, I gave up all dairy! I always cut out chocolate, beans and hard cheeses, but with her, I had to get more drastic.

One great remedy is a colic homeopathic from Hyland's, I think. I will have to look in my medicine cabinet and get back to you. I already bought some in anticipation of my little guy needing it when he gets here. It is a liquid so easier to give than the little pills.

I just want to add that with this baby, if I don't drink enough she doesn't stool as often. She once went about 10 days and then I started drinking water like I should and she went back to going every day or every other day. But, it is perfectly ok for an ebf to go several days without a stool.

I have cut down on dairy and I don't eat chocolate. She still has a lot of air in her tummy. It might be the way she nurses. She still gets very upset every evening for about an hour or so. I don't drink as much water as I should. I didn't know that would make a difference. I will try to increase my water intake and see if that helps her. She still only going potty every two or three days. I guess that's her schedule.

Molly, I'm going to try and find the Hyland's at the health food store this week. I ditched the gripe water after reading there was a recall on it.

Ruth, I just had another thought, do you eat or drink much citrus? How about caffeine?

No caffeine, and hardly any citrus. I usually drink a lot of milk, but I have cut it out and I'm forcing myself to drink water.

One of my babies was sensitive to tomatoes - and right after she was born we had a lot of meals with a tomatoe sauce base (they generally are easy to freeze). Don't know if it was the highly acidic nature of the meals or the tomatoe sauce but when we cut back, things got better. I found the big thing was not eating the same things time after time but to vary what I ate. Brocoli could be another offender if I had it too much.

Ruth, I love cereal, so I ended up using rice milk for cereal and other things that I liked milk with. It was an adjustment, but I ended up liking it.

And for a treat (I love ice cream!) I would splurge on Haagen-Daaz sorbet!

I was wrong about the colic medicine. Hyland's makes the little pills, which I use sometimes as well. But the liquid I was talking about is Boiron Cocyntal. That always worked quickly for Em.

Hope it all smooths out soon. I know how frustrating and exhausting it is for you both.
