Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Do you pronounce it KAH-ter-ee, ka-TARE-ee, or another form?

Thanks!

I've heard it both ways. Someone (can't remember who, now) told me "KAH-ter-ee" was the correct way, but I have no idea how you'd verify that.

This is our dd's name. We were told by our Bishop that the actual pronunciation in Mohawk is GAH-del-ee!!!
We heard Holy Father Pope JP II pronounce it Ka-TEAR-ee (kinda like 'Katiri'), and that is how we say it for the most part. I think both Ka-TEAR-ee and Ka-TARE-ee are close enough (when you say them both quickly)that they are interchangeable.
Just please don't say CAT-er-ee!

We call our dd Kateri as in Cat-er-ee. My dh feels it is closest to the Mohawk pronunciation of Gah-de-lee and also to Katherine, of which it is a form.
We only call her Ka-tear-ee when she's sad.

we had learned that it was along the lines of "gah de lee" also, and so Cat-er-ee was the closest. Kateri that way is very close then to Caterina, or Catherine.

sigh, we have the problem with our Maria Gianna, one of the reasons we did not name her Gianna Marie!!
It is really John-a, because it is a feminized of Giovanni or Gianni, (both male for John) just with an "a" at the end to feminize it.
the pronunciation of Gian is "john"
everyone says "GEE- Ahna" though, which drives us nuts!!!

I've taught several students who all used different pronounciations... but all spelled the same.
1. CAT-tree
2. Kuh- TAIR- ree
3. Kuh-TEER-ree

And one of the rooms at college was called
KATE -tuh-ree

So I never know how to pronounce it.

I favor the KAH-ter-ee pronunciation, which is the one which seems to most closely match the "original" pronunciation. I knew there were other ways, but just wanted to verify that this was a legit choice.

We did this with both of our daughters! We have a Jacinta and a Gianna, and we "Americanized" the pronunciation of both of them, just so they wouldn't be constantly mispronounced. We say Ja-SIN-ta and Gee-AH-na instead of Ha-seen-ta and John-a. Jacinta's middle name is Therese though, and we pronounce it ter-EHZ, the French way not ter-EES, the American way. So whatever!

Thanks for the information on the pronunciation of Gianna. We have a little Gianna and always pronounced it "GEE-Ahna". Little did we know that we were pronouncing it "wrong". Although what is quite funny is that we sometimes call her "John-a", because my 3 year old has a hard time saying "GEE-Ahna"! I think "Gee-Ahna" is her name for good as she's already almost 2!
