I have looked at these blankets for years...
http://www.magiccabin.com/magiccabin/product.do?section_id=0 &bc=1004&pgc=75&cmvalue=MCD|0|Normal%20Search%20Result|P1
...but I have a strong bias toward cotton. These ones are flannel backed. Have you ever used one of these, and do you like them? I allow myself only one extravagant purchase for each baby, and usually its a blanket of some sort (my first three had lambswool rugs). I'm curious about them...

I haven't had any.. but silk is wonderful.. it's a natural fiber like cotton or wool.. so it insulates (I use silk long underwear ) but is very lightweight and oh so soft.

Does it breathe, though? I'm worried about overheating and the baby feeling stifled, like with polyester or microfleece?

oh no not at all.. that's what it being a natural fiber does.. it has wonderful breathability just like cotton does.

I had a wonderful blanket for my son - it was super-soft cotton flannel framed with silk on the edges.
The best of both worlds :-).

OOOOhh! I'm so glad you posted this Books! I've been eyeing the same sweet silk baby blanket from Magic Cabin. I'm still on the fence, but leaning towards the purchase. I love silk, it's quite warm, and lined with flannel, it just doesn't seem to get better than that. Hmmmm....what to do??? I've got a few months to decide. Let us know if you order it and what you think!

I dunno...I can't get over the silk. For some reason I think I'm not going to like it. I went looking at baby blankets a week or so ago and saw an absolutely gorgeous all organic cotton in that neutral color that lots of organics come in, and I couldn't stop touching it. It was so soft. Plus, I like blankets in cotton knit that stretch for swaddling.

Where did you find the organic cotton blankie??? I have a couple of blankets that are in good condition to use with this baby, but I am looking for one nice outing blanket (possible the silk blanket,) and I am desperately seeking a very lightweight, larg-ish all cotton blanket to use as a nursing cover. I'm resolved that I may have to sew this one myself, but if you've seen some nice options...
I hate how most of the swaddling blankets I find are poorly made, and way too small. Should I just start sewing now??

It was a babies r us, believe it or not. The other swaddling blanket that is light that I loved was the Scottish Lace Blanket that Land's End used to sell (I don't know if they still do). My 4th still has hers on her bed.

As an aside, I have the organic cotton sheets and bumper pads from Babies R Us on my baby and toddler cribs and they are wonderfully soft and natural, and wash and wear quite well.
