So, for those of you who have had double strollers  what brand/kind do you like or recommend? What, if anything, do you not like about the kind you have?
We need to get one in the next few months . . . 
This is the kind I have read absolutely rave reviews on: phil and teds
Supposedly light, easy to fold, SUPER easy to steer, not too long or too wide.
But in USD it is $600 and even on ebay $400. Not happening. 
I have a Graco carseat so I have thought of the Graco DuoGlider, but I have a s-i-l that complains about it's length and difficulty with manouvering.
So, what do you think?

the duoglider is a real work horse imo.
yes it's long.. it needs handles that go out to the sides more for easier steering... BUT it's only a problem for me if the front seat is heavy.. as long as a fairly lightweight child is in front it's really not bad.
I've hauled that thing through the fair, parks, walks on the streets here in town. I put the back seat down and sit two children in there.. I think one year for the fair I even had 4 kids in there.. 3 sitting and one standing holding onto the back of the front seat. They were all fairly small kids.
Carseats work in the front seat.. lay the seat back as far as it goes and the seat fits in and locks (I add a bungee cord around it like a car seatbelt for extra safety).
I've had it for 7 years now and no problems. I've definately gotten my money's worth from it.

I am really short myself, and have a Graco Duoglider from my sister. It is an OLDER version, so VERY heavy and tough to steer, so I agree with Jodie on the weight. It is easier if the smaller child is in the front.
I borrowed an newer version of the DuoGlider and fell in love with how easy it was to steer! We used it in WDW, and loaded it up with drinks and snacks, and it was easier to use than my sister's single stroller. I told my DH that the NEXT kid we were doing one of those! It's not a bad price either, and compatable with your carseat.
Have you tried any kind of free cycle, or craig's list? There are so many places to get things now, that may be cheap.

We have a Duoglider--we bought it last summer, just before my daughter was born. It definitely is long (we call it the "limo"), but overall, I think it is a great deal. We were looking for something cheap but durable. It rolls and steers well, though ours tends to veer a bit to the right for some reason. A carseat can clip on either the front or the back seat (or both!). I can lift it on my own without a problem. We do have to remove the front tray and sunshade to fit it into the trunk of our car (a Jetta), but the accessories are very easy to fit on and off. And the basket underneath is a nice size. I think we'll be using it for many years to come.

Mine was a Graco, and it looked like the DuoGlider picture but I don't remember the name. I could open it one handed. It lifted out of the trunk easily even when I was pregnant. It was very easy to use. Sturdy and simple. Loved it. My triple stroller was a pain and a half.
I definitely recommend the long strollers over the wide ones (where kids sit next each other rather than in front and behind each other).

when the my dd#2 was nearing birth, my dd#1 was only barely 1... dh was gone alot and I was going to be on my own, with a 4 yr old to boot.
we ended up getting a double jogging stroller from Nordictrack. both seats recline, though not all the way. and the bags/baskets on the back/bottom are roomy. it has a large canopy with little side pockets (I put my keys and cell phone in them).
it was wide though... hard to manuver through the department stores. but I did take it everywhere. the mall, the doc, the grocery store...and of course everywhere outside from teh park to the beach.
I still have it 6 yrs later and it is still in great condition.
if I would have known about phil and ted's back then, I would have bought one of those.

We have a Peg Perego double that we bought for a big trip. We previously had a Graco which fell apart rather quickly. The Peg Perego has been wonderful and is in great shape for the amount of abuse it has seen. I would definitely buy one again.

We always did Peg Perego! They are wonderful. pricey bit worth every dime.

My Duo Glider had wheel issues- we went through two sets of rear wheels before giving it up. Also, being long, it was hard to wrestle in and out of the trunk of my Honda Accord. It did fit fine in there, but I had to get it in just so,
Then I tried a Sit and Stand (Baby Trend), which was great on flat surfaces but not good for neighborhood walking (inclines), when it became very hard to push and steer.
Finally I got a double jogging stroller- how I wish I would have had that all along! The Phil and Ted is pricey- but something like that looks perfect. Could you ask for it as a combined Christmas/birthday present? Using it nearly every day- quality and comfort is important

We have a Phil and Ted's--it was a gift. We really, really love it. I feel a bit guilty about how much I love this stroller, but it has made my life so much easier.
BUT, we live in a city and walk everywhere. Most two-kid families in our neighborhood have this stroller. I also have a handicapped toddler. If my son could walk or if we primarily used a car, I don't think I'd get this stroller. It is definitely not light and it is a real space hog in our trunk. It maneuvers fantastically well, and it is a breeze to push even though the total weight (kids plus stroller) is well over 80 lbs. But, again, we walk everywhere over bumpy brick sidewalks. I'm not sure I'd need something this maneuvarable and shock absorbing if I were mostly going shopping.
The convertible option with this stroller definitely gives it a major edge. But, the single stroller is still pretty big. We have a MacLaren umbrella stroller that we now keep in the car and that is often what we'd rather have if we just need one kid in the stroller. T's because of the design.
I don't know how coherent this all is . . . sorry! Basically, if you walk a ton and really need two kids in the stroller the whole time, this is a great stroller. It's incredibly well-built. But, it does seem like the cost outweighs the benefits for most families. Feel free to ask if you have other questions.

We have Phil & Ted's too. I think the site was joggingstroller.com (or something like that -- I'd search for a site along those lines). It was not $600 when we got it (might have been 5 or 4, with the 2 seats -- We got it sometime w/in the last 2 yrs.). Shipping was probably free.
The bottom seat crotch area strap piece is not my fave on the Phil & Ted's. It is not long enough IMO. With the front spot, the crotch part comes up appropriately. With the back seat, it is attached to the seat (think under your bottom) and comes up that way. There is a lot less fabric to work with, and I usually have to lift the child up to get the fabric in order to buckle him in. It is a pain.
I don't have an other 2+ seat stroller to compare with, but I don't think the Phil & Ted's is either light nor heavy. There are times when it feels one way or the other to me... reflecting my energy level for the day, I guess.
I had been interested in the sit-n-stand style by Baby Trend, but at the time it was out of stock (apparently even strollers have model years--found this out the hard way) everywhere except ebayers, and I'm not an ebay person. I still like them when I see them. I know my guys would love the standing part.

I love my DuoGlider. We bought it nearly 4 years ago, have used it most every day and it still works great (still using it) and we'll be able to continue to use it when this new baby is born.
I don't like the ones you posted because it seems unfair to the kid in the back--they have nothing to look at!

Thanks SO much for all the thoughts! I am still thinking/deciding what we'll get -- I still have 4 mos.
I'm leaning against a Graco -- I struggle with lifting the single I have up into our Trailblazer even now. But, I guess double strollers are just gonna be heavy and big either way . . .
And I don't think I want a sit and stand one -- my daughter will only be 21mos. when this new one comes.
Other than that I am very undecided.
BTW, look what I found about a Phil & Teds recall
Hmm. But I guess this was over a year ago.

We got a new Phil and Teds after the recall and they now come standard with fenders for the rear tires.
Let me add to my former convoluted review:
You would think that the lower seat would be really boring, but my very finicky daughter loves it and her older brother often begs to be allowed to ride in the bottom seat.
Also, there are two models the new one is the "sport" model which has mostly cosmetic advantages. The major difference is the height adjustable handle. We tried an old one for a week before buying the new one and we're not sure the adjustability is all that valuable. The older ones can be considerably cheaper--and be sure to check Ebay.
If you use a stroller a lot, try to get what you love. I was really amazed at the difference when we finally got a good stroller. Maybe a few people can go in together on a baby gift for you. My grandparent's were sold when they saw how well-built the Phil and Ted's is. We hope to have lots of kids, and I don't think we'll need to replace this one!

I'll put in another vote for the Peg Perego Aria Twin side-by-side. My 4.5yo is just now getting too big for it, but it was perfect for them both for the year we used it (bought it used last Aug). I'm hoping our new baby will get lots of use out of it!

I love my Sit and Stand and my kids are all 21 months apart. They do very well standing and staying or I can buckle them in if they are too busy. In the early months the baby is usually on my body anyway, so it's the 21 month old who is in the front, and one or 2 of the next guys on the seat and standing. We've walked all over Hawaii and DC with it. I LOVE IT! Also liked my Duo glider and the Peg Perego and the other double I had. We abuse our strollers so I get new one about every 2 years. I have the Sit and Stand (on it's last wheels but it's still ok) and the PEg PErego (used from my sister) now.

My best friend has twins and swears by the duo glider. Another dear friend with lots of littles says she wears the wheels out on her duo glider every year or two and is fed up with them.
I'm eyeing up the Sit n Stand that One Step Ahead sells right now. The wheels are a better quality than the ones in the stores, and the double stroller looks awesome, along with the Sit n Stand spot, which is great when the 21 month old turns 2 1/2. I wore my cheaper sit n stand out and just love them. The double Sit n Stand is not cheap, but its under $200.

I had the Peg Perego that had one seat and then a perch on back for young one to stand on. It worked like a dream and folded up to stand upright on it's own- not upright like the Graco's, but completely folding in similar to an umbrella stroller. It also had a great handle that you could carry it with with one hand. It reclined all the way, which was great for a newborn, but then the back perch didn't work so hot. It was sort of pricey, but was a gift (go figure, the 4th baby got the only new stroller!!)
When I was in Scandanavia when I was pregnant with my 4th, alot of people there had these little skateboardy things that clipped onto that back of their stroller that the toddler could stand on and hold onto the arms of the stroller- hard to explain, but a pretty neat gadget that was not to pricey and could convert a regular stroller.
