Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Just a few questions, hoping some of you can share your experiences. I'm experiencing a high-risk pregnancy, with possible danger to both me and the baby. There's a high probability of bed rest along the way.

I will be definitely having a c-section. I went through the same scenario with my son, but everything came out miraculously. No hemorrhaging, no blood transfusions or hysterectomy. But all those things are possible again.

So how much do you expect in miracles and how much do you plan beforehand? This could be a long haul recovery. I don't want to worry (working on that), but I have been warned.

And what do you do with a 4 year old when on bed rest? How many meals did you prepare beforehand? What's the best to freeze (that have no dairy, wheat or eggs)?

Did you stay in your bed, or come downstairs and stay on the couch during the day?

Any suggestions and advice would be appreciated. With ds I never went completely bed rest, as I had no bleeding, but very moderate activity. So I'm hoping it might be the same agian.

I was on bedrest for a long time with my first child, but that was simple because it was only me. I got up in the morning and came downstairs, and went back upstairs at night. I ate whatever was easiest to fix for myself, and I timed getting drinks etc. when I needed to be up to use the facilities anyway.

With my second child I wasn't formally on strict bedrest but I also couldn't do much. It was a very hot summer and I'd dehydrate and feel terrible ill and contract-y quickly, for some reason. My son was right around five at the time. I could make lunch without too much trouble, and a friend of mine took him swimming nearly every day. We'd read a lot and colored together, and he played independently when I needed to be on the couch. We also watched too much TV, but we did what we needed to do.

Hope this helps. I'll be praying for you.

Jenn,
I understand where you're at right now. I gave birth to my third child in Feb., and it was a long haul after many, many miscarriages. This birth was my third c section, and the pregnancy was complicated with blood pressure issues, gestational diabetes, and preterm labor. I began bedrest at 26 weeks. It was hard, but my kids were older (5 and 10), so they could do a lot of things on their own, or for me. With my DD, I was on bedrest for 9 weeks while caring for my son, who was just turning 4. It was hard, but doable - I spent the days on the couch, and DH would make sure everything was in reach. DS and I did a lot of quiet activities like coloring and puzzles, read lots of books, and watched movies together. He actually remembers that time fondly, although he did get frustrated at times that I couldn't take him anywhere. We had friends or DH for that.

This time, knowing what I was up against, I planned a lot. I prepared some meals when I started feeling like my days were numbered. I was also very blessed to have some church ladies who provided us with lots of meals. I also created a network for myself, because we have no family here. I made sure people from church, and my neighbors, were aware that I might need help. I did get some wonderful support, and it lessened the stress of the whole thing a bit. I am praying for you and your family!
