I've decided on the kind of sling i want to buy. I dont know how to sew but my mom does and she could make me one if i give her instructions on how. I cant afford to buy 2 kinds of sling so i'd like to buy one new and make one. Does anyone know of a website for making your own moby wrap? thanks!

This is the difinitive spot for making your wrap. If you use the right fabric, you don't even have to sew!

Thank you Lisa! I emailed it to my mom. It's really easy making a moby wrap! Hopefully my mom can get me a good nuetral color fabric. I trust her though. She's been sewing ever since i was a kid so she knows her fabrics. She'll be able to make it for under $10!

Lisa or anyone else familiar with make-your-own wraps: I have a question on fabrics.
On Mamatoto and others, cotton gauze is recommended as probably the best choice. I made a wrap with fabric from my stash just to use around the house. Now that I've gotten the hang of the wrap, I want to make one for outdoor use. (Read: I need to get nicer-looking fabric!  )
So I'm on the market...do you suggest cotton gauze as well? Have you had better luck with something else? What's the Moby made out of? (I've never seen one in person.)

Celeste, I have used cottong gauze, it's nice in the summer, but not terribly soft, esp. if your baby is bitty. The Moby is made out of a cotton knit, which is really nice. If you buy your own cotton knit, buy something with some give to it, but not too much, or it will sag from the weight of the baby.
I have had luck with a nice soft cotton quilting flannel. It's very soft, snuggly for fall and winter, and it's thin enough that I doubled over a 60" width of it so there was no 'wrong' side showing. The only problem with it is that it wrinkles after it is washed so I have to iron it.
A cotton fleece would work well in the cooler months too, no more than 27" wide though, or it will be to bulky.
Graciefaith, I have made 2 wraps for $5. WalMart often has good fabric choices on clearance for $5/yard. If it's at least 60" wide, I cut it down the center and have 2!

I have a couple made with the cotton gauze. I really like them. Nice and cool (but totally fine for cooler months as well). I think the real Moby's are a stretchier knit. i have a knit "make your own" and I did like it but not as much as the cotton gauze type.

One other question, if you don't mind: Mamatoto suggests a 20-inch width, but Lisa, it sounds like you like a 30-inch width--is that right? What is best? Any suggestions on the ideal length and width?

I think the ideal lenght for most women is about 5 yards. I am pretty petite so I have been known to make due just fine with 4 yards. If you are over 5'3" or about 140lbs. I would not go with any less than 5 yards, maybe a little bit more. As for width, I think 20" is way to narrow to do a nice secure back carry. 30" has always been perfect for me. Any less, and I would rule out back carries, any more is too bulky.

As far as cotton guaze and softness-some will soften with washings. I washed and dried mine about 6x to get it to soften up and that makes a difference I think.
I agree that 20" is probably too narrow for width-I thought I read that 25" or more is best. But it also depends on you and what wraps you do and how comfortable you are with your wrap. The more experienced and the bigger the baby, you can go narrower depending on the carry.
As far as length, I'd always error on the side of caution and go longer. It's pretty easy to cut it down later and hem.
