My sweet Emily turned one on Friday! The problem is, she does not eat anything other than the occasional Cheerio. She nurses round the clock, which is fine, but I am already pretty dehydrated with this pregnancy and think it would help if I could get her to eat some food. She is quite chunky, so she isn't suffering. She loves to drink from a cup as well. She just doesn't eat!
Any suggestions? She totally rejected baby foods. We try throwing frozen peas on her tray, bananas, mashed potatoes, etc.

Oh man if she doesn't like bananas... that's been our miracle food to go with Cheerios!
Molly -- these aren't very original ideas so please excuse me, but they worked for us:
unsweetened applesauce
scrambled eggs (provided the no allergies thing)
we cut up all sorts of melon for our guys shortly after they turn a year (and as Farmer's Market season is around the corner...)-- sometimes it makes diapers interesting...

my cousin's 12mo baby doesn't eat food yet and i mentioned this to a friend of mine. she told me that not eating before 12mo can be serious and often requires speech therapy. i had never heard this and googled it up and dr greene mentions aversion to solids here.
don't mean to imply that your dd has any problems, i'm just passing along information. it had never occurred to me before that there were kids who don't eat - i can't seem to keep stuff out of my 10mo's mouth!
good luck!

My 12 mo. old (just 3 days older than your dd!) loves pasta...lasagna is one of his favorites. He's a pretty good eater now but it is really just in the last couple of months that he's taken off...my other children ate well from the get go (anywhere from 4-7 months). He just wasn't interested at all.

I had one that wasn't much interested in eating at that point either.. but soon as he was.. he also stopped nursing very shortly after.
My big suggestion would be to give her food with texture.. not all smooshed up.. little bits of cut up banana rather than mashed.. roughly chopped up boiled potatoes, not mashed potatoes.. A different child of mine would reject anything with a real smooth mashed texture.

If she likes to drink and you want to get some healthy calories in her, what about the yogurt smoothie drinks by Stonyfield Farm? I buy them for my very skinny 4yo. It doesn't help with introducing solids, but it might help her nurse a bit less, which may help you in this early pregnancy stage.

Never heard this before either. My oldest daughter wouldn't eat much of anything until she was 14-15 months old. I offered a variety of foods to her regularly, she just wasn't interested beyond a spoonful of cereal or banana or whatever.
She only started eating more solids once she had enough dexterity to use a spoon and do it herself. I bought some of those baby spoons w/ curved handles for her. She made a mess, but she did eat.
A friend told me that sometimes babies who have food allergies or sensitivities will delay eating solids...sort of a natural defense mechanism to give their little bodies more time to mature.
fwiw, my oldest daughter is a VERY good talker. She speaks very clearly...all the time...

My Molly will be 1 in 18 days! Where DOES the time go????
She is an avid eater. Not all of my kids have been like this though. She eats what we eat at this point, sans anything with eggs. Bagels with a little smidge of cream cheese, (I make them myself, so there is no egg.) Pasta, she digs pasta. Oatmeal, and like Maryan mentioned, fruit. It's really exciting right now going into summer so much fresh fruits and veggies are available. Last night we discovered she loves cucumber slices dipped in hummus. She devoured these! Apple slices with the skins removed, pineapple chunks, etc...

All my dc rejected the typical baby type foods. Nothing smashed for them. Finger foods, Meat, even a whole piece of broccoli (that one was unplanned for sure) things like that were their first foods. I know this is odd and you want to cut it up small and be there when they eat. My oldest and earliest talker didn't eat much until after she was 1 yo. By then she was talking quite fluently!

Molly, aren't each of our little eaters so different? It's fascinating, really.
Now to Dr. Greene...

Whoa Dr. Greene! I honestly think that his recommendations are an example of looking for a zebra among horses. It is very, very, very common for 12 mos. old children (especially nursers) to show little or no interest in solids (many horses) and it is quite rare to be talking about speech therapy or inability to swallow solids for physiological reasons (a zebra.) Check out what kellymom.com has to say about some of Dr. Greene's assumptions about "window of opportunity" to start solids. Here is more on iron supplements. Here are some more ideas for starting solids.
My first child, a heavy nurser and sensitive child, didn't touch solids until well after her first birthday. She also skipped the gradual increase from nursing to solids...she went straight to solid foods in bite-sized pieces...and lots of them. A funny side note, now this child is a wonderful eater and cook...a regular foodie .
Molly, please take good care of yourself and get hydrated! I need to listen to my own advice so I'll start a mommy hydration thread over at Fireside .
Love,

Thanks for the input! I hadn't really tried any chunkier foods because I worry about her knowing how to chew it up. I have tried very small pieces of plain chicken, but she didn't like it.
Reading Dr Greene, I don't think Emily falls within the group he is talking about anyway. She can handle chewing Cheerios and swallowing them, as well as a cracker here and there. She just doesn't want it.
I guess she could probably go right to real table food, but I was worried about choking. Wow, you would think that by baby 7, I would have this all figured out.
On the topic of choking then, has anyone used this?
It looks pretty neat, especially when I am so distractable and worry about not paying attention when she is eating.
Irene, maybe I will try the smoothies. At least now she is a year, I can give her dairy. But maybe, since I had to avoid dairy when she was smaller, I shouldn't give it to her now. Hmmm. Maybe that goes with Dawn's suggestion about sensitivities causing a delay.
Good thing she's so cute!
Angie, I started a thread about something new to drink over at Fireside Chat for the very reason that I can't seem to keep hydrated and my usual drinks aren't cutting it now.

gosh, i sure don't mean to imply that all kids who are not eating by 12mo have speech issues or need feeding tubes and i hope i said that in my earlier post. this info was a surprise to me as well - our piano teacher's granddaughter does have inability to swallow (zebra!) and is receiving speech therapy at 13 mon. my cousin's baby isn't yet eating well and is being checked out by the ped.
i'm in no way suggesting that this is the case for molly's baby. i'm just passing along information i learned since all my life i've only known horses and now suddenly, i know 2 zebras.
(thanks angie - love the analogy!)

Don't worry about it, Mary. I knew you weren't implying anything, and it is always helpful to pass on resources and information. Dr Greene might be looking for Zebras, and might panic some folks needlessly, but for us thoughtful folks , we can read his opinion and take the good and ignore the rest.
Thanks for the heads up!

Molly,
Someone suggested smoothies earlier...they are REALLY easy to make in your blender. My children have LOVED them. In fact, my oldest daughter called them "milkshakes" for the longest time and thought they were a special treat!
Into your blender put
1 C. plain unsweetened yogurt
1/2 C. orange juice
1/2 to 1 whole ripe banana
1 C. fresh or frozen berries (strawberries are really good) If you use frozen, defrost them in the microwave first for about 1 min., depending on how well your blender handles frozen stuff.
If you think that your daughter may be sensitive to cow's milk, you can also make these w/ soft tofu! You may want to add a little more liquid, though.
On a side note, these are also really good and nutritious to sip on during pregnancy! You could add a few tablespoons of peanut butter for extra protein.
Dawn

What Molly said . Mary, you are awesome to share your experience. Since we have a large readership of new moms here, I just wanted to expand on Dr. Green's recommendations (something I think he should have taken more care to do himself, honestly.)
A friend of mine, Karen G., shared the zebra/horse metaphor with me years ago...it is one that works well in SO many areas of life. I wish I had thought of it myself!
Love,

On choking.. my philosophy is... you can choke on your own spit so what you're aiming for is to keep them from lodging something in their throat that will block their airway. Which is much easier than "keeping them from choking".. at least in my mind

My 15-month old just had a check-up a week or so ago and the pediatrician wants to send him to a Pediatric Therapy Center for an Oral and Chewing motor evaluation, because he doesn't eat solids...just nurses around the clock like a newborn. Well, since I got on the waiting list for the "feeding specialists," Jack has begun to eat table food, just like that! Corn on the cob, rice, diced chicken, "o" cereal. Not much, but he is eating! Finally! I am so relieved that I will not have to go the O.T. route. My gut feeling was just that he one of my pickier and more sensitive eaters, and he would eat in his own time. It appears that feeling was right. My other picky/sensitive guy was my only one not to self-wean during pregnancy, and that was very hard for me. He was older, 2 y.o., and did eat, though he still nursed during the night at least once.
I hope you are able to get some rest and relief.
