When slinging, I have the ring of the sling on my right shoulder. I've found with this baby that my left shoulder has been bothering me. Today I tried switching the sling over so that the ring is on the left shoulder. My sore left shoulder felt better, but I couldn't sling. It felt so odd.

My daughter is heavy. She's a non walking 27 pounds. (She feels heavier than my three year old 36 pound daughter.) She doesn't care for the stroller. I'm thinking I might need a heavy duty back pack to get me out of the house.

Any suggestions on recovering from sling shoulder or for a back pack?

At that weight I would defiantly go for a nice heavy duty quality back pack!   Those littles that are'nt so little are killers in the slings     IMHO

I've heard good things about the Ergo carrier.. when I use a backpack I use a full size backpack carrier.. one of the KeltyKids ones.

Helen, My first baby and my current baby were/are huge. I found that making certain the rings were not on my shoulder was important. They should fall right where you would pin a corsage.

Do you think the left shoulder got sore from holding the baby up with the left arm (while wearing the rings on the right)? Sometimes simply tightening the sling will allow the sling to do the work rather than you having to hold her up with your left hand/arm. I don't know if I am making any sense.

I wear my babies really tight in the sling so the other arm is free to work and does not have to bear their weight.

Just an idea.

Wanted to add that the heavier the baby, the less I am able to wear them in a backpack because it puts so much strain on the shoulders and lower back.

What Rebecca said is true in my experience. Where the ring should go, the tightness and also not being able to wear a pack -- seems to put pressure on the weaker part of my back.

a good backpack should be transfering the weight to the hips and the shoulders only used for balancing.

Good points about the shoulders with the sling too.

You are right about where the weight should be distributed, Jodie. It seems no matter what brand I buy, though, I end up feeling as though my lower back and shoulders hurt unless the baby is only 7-8 months old and small. Just can't seem to wear them more than 20 minutes or so. I think maybe it is because I am swayback.   Perhaps if I stood straighter, the hip pads and frame would rest correctly and bear more of the weight.

Yes Rebecca,I find I'm holding my baby with my left arm once she falls asleep. I have the sling at its tightest. I keep trying to pull it tighter. I think I need a new sling. It's just not tight enough anymore. It has stretched out.

Since she is that heavy, she's probably pretty heavy in a back pack as well. Thanks for your guidance. I think I have a plan!

I can't do a backpack and I had a lot of trouble with my shoulder when using a sling with this baby. I bought a Moby D and it has changed my life! Emily is 24 lbs, so not quite as big as your baby yet. But, I can wear her in the Moby D for several hours without any back strain. It spreads the weight evenly over your whole back, you really don't feel any pulling. And it is completely hands-free!

You can nurse in it, wear baby facing in or out, there is even a way to wear the baby on your back which looks so comfortable for an older baby. I haven't tried it yet.

I have used a sling for 9 years, 5 babies. I have tried several kinds and have always been pretty happy with them. The Moby D is really far more comfortable and convenient.

Just love to share my find!

Is your sling padded (like OTSBH)? I found with my bigger babies that I needed one without padding so I could tighten as much as necessary without the padding stopping it before it was tight enough.

Molly, the Moby D looks really comfortable. Is it hard to put on?

If you do have a padded sling that's limiting tightening.. it's very easy to open up the seams and remove the padding and then sew them back down. Very easy.

Jodie, while I look for my seam ripper ...
if I understand correctly, you are advising me to remove the center padding and leave the edge padding - right? (I have the over the shoulder baby holder.)

No - I do have to remove the side padding.
(I guess I'm eager to get rid of the shoulder pad. )

take out the shoulder pad if you like but yeah.. the padding on the edges/rails of the sling.. that's what's stopping it from pulling down tighter.. you can totally remove it or just far enough from the tail that you can get it tight.

If you want the type with the rings again.. I've really like my maya wrap.. no padding and this great flap that folds over the shoulder so that it can't slide up your neck and you don't have weight over the point of your shoulder either.

No, it isn't hard to put on, even while holding the baby. Usually, I will put it on before leaving the house, or before getting Emily out of her car seat. The worst part is that it is really long, so you have to be careful not to trail it on the ground as you are putting it on. I tend to just leave it on when we are out, whether she is in it or not, so I don't have to put it back on over and over.

I would agree with the suggestion regarding the Moby D. However, if the price tag seems too steep, or if you want to try it out before buying one (they are soooo pretty), you can make your own very easily.

This site will show you how. My favorite ones have been made from a gauzy type fabric. I just fold it over so the fabric is sturdier (absolutely no sewing...although my ends probably should be hemmed )

Lisbet showed me how to do this and I am forever grateful! My current baby has been a cuddler since minute one and we never would have made it without this type of carrier.
