We just finished Hana in the Time of the Tulips as part of a Rembrandt/Baroque mini-study. It is a very sweet and touching story. It's beautifully illustrated. The author's notes at the back of the book about the "tulip mania" and economic crash in Holland between 1634-1637 were really informative. It's a fascinating piece of history I had never heard about.

Oh Mary, I'm so glad you posted that. I was looking for something just like "Hana" for our study of Rubens (---who by the way, was a very interesting Catholic, served as a diplomat/spy for the Catholic kings and so on, besides being a wonderful artist) I had ordered a kids book on him entitled "Peter Paul Rubens" by R. McLanathan and it was awful, don't anyone waste your money on it. It was full of historical errors, exaggerations or ommissions that made the Catholics look horrid and barbaric and everyone else seem all sweetness and light. Grrrr. NOT what I was looking for. On the other hand, "Hana" sounds like just what we needed!

If you are interested in reading more on the subject of tulipmania, Alexandre Dumas wrote a nifty little thriller on the topic, "The Black Tulip".
