Haven't done this book, but we did recently read Brave Harriet about the first woman to fly across the English Channel - Harriet Quimby. It would be a good go-along book for your row.

How about all the different ways people have crossed the channel (sailing, swimming, ballooning, tunnel).

NOVA had a program (which you can get on video) on this topic - A Daring Flight. There are several interesting links at this site and teachers resources.

Make a model of the Bleriot XI aircraft.

Have paper airplane making contests - try flying them over a body of water.

Wright brothers--my son (9) enjoyed their "biography of young americans"

Toward the back of that book are hangars with different pilots' names--maybe look 8into each of them and see what they were doing at the same time.

kite flying could should some of their frustration on getting it to actually work.
